Free (Kindle) The Captive by E. C. Tubb [Vintage Prisoner Escape Adventure Western]
The Captive by the late E. C. Tubb (ISFDB, Wikipedia, Science Fiction Encyclopedia), a prolific multi-genre author best known for his sfnal Dumarest Saga, is his vintage standalone western historical action adventure novel set during the Civil War, starring a man on a mission for for a Union general, who in the course of trying to carry it out, is taken captive by the local Comanche people (Wikipedia), and must find a way to escape and also locate the gold train which is vital to the war effort, free courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Pioneering imprint, who are e-printing it from its 1955 edition originally out from John Spencer, under the title of Comanche Captive using the E. F. Jackson pseudonym.
Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else that Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) Description The desert is a dangerous place… But when desert-wise Don Thorpe is asked by General Colman to undertake a mission of the greatest importance to the Union forces, he does not hesitate to accept. His mission – find the missing train laden with enough Californian gold to buy arms for the entirety of the beleaguered South. Don accepts the dangerous mission but, on the way to Fort Gorman, he arrives upon the scene of an Indian attack. He rescues a beautiful girl and her fiancée from the battle but in aiding their escape, he finds himself taken prisoner by ruthless Comanche Indians. But this is not Don’s first encounter with Indians. Confronted with the terrifying torture customs of the Comanches, will Don manage to escape with his life? Riding through fierce desert storms and encountering enemies on all sides, will he locate the gold train and stop it falling into the wrong hands? And will he ever set eyes upon that beautiful girl again? The Captive is a fast-moving tale that will transport you back to the savage lands of the Old West. |

Eh, the reviewer got 6 out of 8 letters in the name right. And you do have to expand the Read More in the blurb and scroll down to the end to find out that the author has been dead for some time. Points* for… something vaguely resembling effort?
![]() But seriously, this is why I usually go by the author's reputation and the preview sample, rather than random customer ratings (or in some cases, rantings), when it comes to actually deciding on what books to spend actual money upon. * Not many, though, maybe a 6/8. If this were a hypothetical paid shill review, I'd recommend that the purchaser demand at least 25% of their money back. |
