Audible cancellation: $20 coupon

I just went to cancel my Audible membership after a three-month promo offer; Audible offered me a $20 coupon to stay. I accepted the coupon and promptly used up most of it on Whispersync titles. Audible provided no details on an expiration date for using the coupon.

Since my renewal date is two days away, I suspect I might still be able to cancel without being charged, but that feels like it would be pretty cheesy, so I think I'll stay one more month and get one more credit, then try canceling again and see what they offer me.

What method did you use to cancel, phone, chat, website? I've always wondered if one method might engender more or better offers than another.

I canceled on the Web site. The reason I gave was that it was too expensive, if that matters.

Before I accepted the offer, I tried Googling to see what the specific terms of the coupon were, and apparently this is something that's been offered for years, though I don't remember ever seeing anyone mention it here. When I canceled my long-term membership a few months ago, I wasn't offered any sort of perk, so I was pretty surprised today.

That's new to me too. I've never heard of $20 coupons before.

I saw deal sites mentioning it as far back as 2011, but, like you, I never heard of it before today. No idea what would trigger it.

P.S. If anyone gets the offer, Audible's wording is a little odd--they say something like $20 toward your next book, which made me wonder if they meant I could apply up to $20 on a single title. But it works like a regular coupon; I bought three books and still have part of the coupon left over for additional purchases.

It may matter. I cancelled last Friday, stating "have no time to listen to them". I had to go through several "yes, I mean it" screens, but I don't think they offered a $20 coupon.

Or maybe I ignored it and cancelled anyway. But I don't _think_ so.

I'm wondering if they tend to offer a deal after a promo membership. I recall that way back when I first joined and tried to cancel after the promo period, they gave me three months of half-price membership. And now after a promo membership, they gave me the $20 coupon.

But when I canceled a long-term membership, they didn't care one bit, didn't try to entice me to stay with any sweetening at all. They may be more aggressive in getting new members than in retaining old ones.

Mine was also the free 3 month promo membership (around Prime Day). I had never been a member before, though I have bought several dozen short (cheap) books. They did offer me a cheaper membership, and/or definitely the $10.95 for whole year (membership light, are we calling that?) but I didn't bite.

It's apparently one or the other--the half-price membership or the $20 coupon.

This is one of their typical canned enticements to get you to stay. The way to "trigger" it is always to say "too expensive." It won't come up every time but I've gotten it twice, and my wife once. If you've gotten it recently it will instead offer $7.49 a month for 3 months. Another good option is to choose "I don't want to give a reason." Some times it will offer you an instant freebie (with the quote "maybe you just haven't found the right book yet") from a list of titles, kind of like the old "instant sale" where you'd lose the sale if you clicked off the offer.

Can you tell I've been doing this, maybe too much?

But you'll have a credit plus the $20 coupon for the price of a credit.

You need to up the disloyalty factor to make it worthwhile. After you get the credit, binge on Whispersync then you can go ahead and cancel. I've got 10 WS titles already lined up to get next time I get bribed; I can be (a-la Nicholas Cage) "Gone in 60 Seconds."
