Thinking about returning to kobo

Hi,
I purchased a Kobo Glo a few years ago that I ended up giving to my oldest daughter. I got tired of having to reset the device about 2x a week for screen freezes. I currently use a kindle voyage. It works well with no issues, but the new larger screen size of the Aura One and the Overdrive integration is a temptation I'm finding hard to resist. I also like dark fonts and miss the weight options offered by Kobo.

I mostly read fanfiction and library books, so I am not worried about being "tied down" to any particular store.

Are the Kobo devices still glitchy?(freezes and such) I hated getting settled into bed only to have to get up and search for a pin to reset the reader.

Thanks,

Penny

My H2O does not lock or freeze. It is very reliable.

I'm shopping as well and just purchased a glo HD with plans to preorder a "one" and I've been strictly Sony devices up to this point.

I've never had a Kobo , I have had Kindles, Ipads, and a Nexus. I do like the idea of the larger screen Aura One. I just got a couple e inks this year, so I'm good for a while. Darn it !

Although if my husband gets the Aura One, I can try his !

I'll tell you, my Kobo Glo is a little glitchy as well - same issues you have described. I think there was just a bad production run. Otherwise, I have loved it and have never heard of a broad swath of issues.

C'mon back, the water is fine!

I have a Kobo Aura and I used to have a Kobo Glo and both were very stable. I also have a Paperwhite and a Voyage and they're even more stable but none of them regularly lock up.

The Kobo problems I have are always very minor; font weight not working with one book and working fine with another, etc.

By the way I also have had 3 Kobo Mini's at various times and they were also stable.

I prefer Kindles to Kobos but it's only a small preference. I'd be happy with either one.

When I purchased my first Kobo Glo years ago, I had the same experience as you... needing to reset it sometimes several times a day. I tried downgrading to a different firmware and it was perfect after that. I've never experienced the same issue again on other Glo and Glo HDs that I've since purchased.

So yeah, come back to Kobo. I love the Glo HD, perfect size and options for me.

Windows 10 updates is causing some compatibility problems with Kobo Readers and other things. Not the first time Microsoft has caused such glitches or the likely the last by accident or on purpose. Windows 10 update is suppose to fix the present problem.

Kobo readers sometimes have problems loading poorly formatted books from flaky sources. Find and delete problem book solves problem. Then fix the book.

Do check with your library if Overdrive integration is important to you. My library is GASP dumping Overdrive in September.

I have had and still sometimes have tons of problems with my H2O... It randomly fails to unmount properly from Calibre and does not register books loaded onto the device (does not search for new books, does not update the library). It freezes occasionally. It occasionally gets the database corrupted, forcing me to restore my content (and losing my notes and highlights in the process). Maybe this is specific to the Mac build of Calibre or some Mac-specific USB stuff but it certainly does not work as “advertised” here on the board, and never has (been using the H2O since 3.12.something). I have switched to "downloading" my Calibre books from Calibre server and that mostly solved all my problems, but this is far from a „just plug in and control everything“ kind of experience.
If you’re in for a no-frills-experience, either get a Kindle right away or only purchase from the Kobo store. It is a great device for reading but Calibre is, at least in my opinion, far from an ideal companion...

This is not a problem across the board with Macs, the Mac build of Calibre, or Mac-specific USB stuff. H2O, Calibre and Mac here and am not seeing any of these problems. Have you posted your own trouble-shooting thread with as much detail as possible?

I'm a first time Kobo owner. I bought a Glo HD in January and I've had no problems with it. I'm quite happy I took that chance. I love my tiny reader.

My H2O does freeze occasionally, but it only requires a soft reset, not a hard one, so it's not really a problem.

Poor JohnnyB - I haven't seen anyone else with those kinds of complaints. I use Windows 7 rather than a Mac, but using Calibre with my Kobo (or my previous Sonys) has been trouble free.

I've been very happy with my H2O. I'm only not interested in the Aura One because I'd rather go smaller than larger. I'd really like one-handed operation. It's my dream
