Where to buy in europe + why sell broken e-readers?
Ok, sorry if this is the wrong forum.. Couldn't figure where to post.
Primary question: Where can I buy e-readers in Europe? Online preferably... I have yet to find a swedish store with one, although I might just be bad at searching. (Except the Letto frontlight fom adlibris) I'm happy with my reader, but I like to look around :P Perhaps I should get a spare...or try another model... or just waste my money because I feel like it.. What models should I be able to find around here? I'm curious about the kindle, but I've read about people getting in trouble with amazon for using their devices in the wrong country..doesn't make sense to me, but it makes me wonder if I want to risk it. I do buy books from them once in a while... Secondary question: When I looked around on ebay, I saw loads of broken e-readers for sale.. stuff like ''stuck on front page'', ''cracked screen'', ''can't hold battery'' and issues that made them more or less completely useless... I guess a small crack in the screen doesn't necessary mean you can't read a book on it, but when the whole screen is wrecked... Is there an alternative use for broken e-ink devices that I don't know of? ![]() |

If the electronics are dead but not the screen, it might be used to supply a replacement screen. If the battery is dead, a replacement battery might be obtained. And if it's an old Kindle, if it can be registered at Amazon, even with a broken screen, it gives an easy way to remove DRM from your books. |

Oh, okay... well that makes sense I guess.
![]() btw.. how common is it for e-readers to support sound? I don't think my current one does. I just figure if I might want to listen to audiobooks. |

I understand from your post that you live in Sweden? Amazon sells both Kindles and Kindle books to Sweden, why would you get in trouble for purchasing a Kindle from them? You can use sideloaded content from other sources on your Kindle, that's not forbidden.
I got all my Kindles from Amazon. The last one, Oasis, from Amazon.de, the earlier ones from Amazon.com. A local bookshop here in Estonia sells Kobo readers and they deliver to Sweden: https://www.rahvaraamat.ee/c/ereaders/5/en Apologies if I got it wrong and you live in some other country. |

You can buy Kobo readers from Amazon.de as well. And if you want audio, there is Pocketbook Touch Lux: https://www.amazon.de/Pocketbook-Tou...rds=pocketbook, it has speakers.

AnemicOak - ok, just wondered
![]() Sirtel: Yes, I' in Sweden. I've just heard of people getting in trouble and amazon wiping their kindle libraries and refusing to sell to them because they bought a kindle from the wrong store or something.. like I said; I don't quite get it.. But if I look at amazon where I've bought some of my books, they don't ship to my adress. So kindle seems to be out of question anyway.. Thanks, I'll look at the store ![]() I found a few online stores here in sweden too, but it's really weird trying to search for anything..if I use pricerunner or the like it finds the e-readers and takes me to the store..but if I go to the store and search for e-reader (or any other word for e-reader or e-ink device I can think of in swedish or english) there is no search results... I usually find what I look for but..it's pretty weird. I found some anyway.. and I might give ebay another try. Just have to add customs for those purchases... But I'm curious about the kobos ![]() |

Zelandi,
That was generally people using something to buy books from another country because they were not available in their country. If you don't understand how it is done, then you won't be doing it so no worries. |

Well I use the us-version of amazon (I'm co-author to a book there and it was the link I first clicked on, seems my browser keeps going back?) and it all confuses me a lot. I don't even know what version I should use or why I'm not auto-directed elsewhere... since they can see where my computer is. Or why it would be different... I guess some books or stuff is not released everywhere? Lke they won't ship the kindle device to sweden, but I have to find a europe-version to have it ordered? (found none when I looked on 'my' amazon)... I read a few other threads about new upcoming kindle formats and stuff, and it's all way over my head.. so I'm going to shy away from kindles anyway ![]() They're confusing and messy, I don't want to buy stuff from them. Except cheap or free books. (I don't like that they have my credit card saved either, frankly... no other store I know of keeps that info for future purchases..then again I hardly ever use the card for online buys.. but they gave me no other option, which I dislike). But thanks for explaining ![]() ![]() |

Also you can delete the credit card after every purchase. You just have to re-enter it to get a book. Does Amazon let you grab free books there? If yes then you will be fine. Yes, Amazon knows where you are. The people that are posting they lost their libraries used a VPN to show that they were in a different country. They had their computers lie to Amazon. They purposely did it. Since Amazon knows where you are, there is no way to accidentally buy a book you aren't supposed to have. As far as formats go, Amazon sends the format that best goes with your kindle. It is not a concern unless you convert or are worried about saving your library on your computer. Now if it was me and I wanted a kindle, I would find the one I want at whichever Amazon you use. Try to buy it, you will either get a kindle or you will get a message saying go to your country's store. I have read all the same threads. Most are complaining especially on the books from other countries because they got caught doing something wrong. I think Sweden can use either Amazon.Com or Amazon.de. Just a little something to think about. |

Thanks for the explanation
![]() I do make back-ups on my computer. And put the books on my non-kindle e-reader, so I bet they dislike that whole thing (but frankly I'm not giving the books away to other people and steal money from amazon or the authors that way, so I don't feel the least guilty for it) I'll see ![]() ![]() |
