Problems with high DPI display
Hi,
I just upgraded to a new Windows 10 laptop with a default DPI of 3200x1800. Calibre doesn't display everything quite right at this DPI. I've done some research, and have edited the properties (such as "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings") and even tried reducing the screen resolution without success. At best, Calibre looks just a bit strange. And there are some places where I can't even see the icons at all, such as in the comments box when editing metadata. (See screen shot). I seem to recall that Kovid said this wasn't going to be fixed until he got a high DPI display. Does anyone else have suggestions? I cannot be the only Calibre user out there with a high DPI display! Thanks in advance. |

It's hard for me to fix High DPI issues without a way to replicate them. So yeah, until I get myself a high DPI monitor, there is not likely to be much progress on this.
That said, if you point out specific issues I can try to look into the code and see if I can make adjustments that might help. |

It's quite difficult to use Calibre on devices like the Surface, so it might be something worth passing the hat around for now that high-DPI laptops and tablets are becoming increasingly common.

Depending on your video card and/or OS, a high DPI monitor is not necessarily required to test DPI issues. I know that on Windows at least, if you have a NVIDIA or AMD video card, it is possible to set a virtual resolution that is higher than your monitor, and will then be scaled down. You can then change the DPI scaling options to mimic a high DPI monitor.
I don't know whether this is possible on other OS's, or with Intel graphics, but it may be worth a try to see if it's possible. |

Since 3840 x 2160 28" monitors go for $299 or so these days, it shouldn't be hard to get a group to pony it up. Having said that, the first two areas that come up are in Preferences, where the icons come out as tiny. If you choose "very large" icons in the preferences, that effects the main and secondary icon bar, but does not effect the size of the icons displayed in preferences. The second one that hits me a lot is when using the "Manage Series" plugin. The individual lines are about 70% of the font's line height, so you can't read them. I did manage to come up with font and line height choices that worked on the main screen, but all plugins ignore them. |

Try using the QT_DEVICE_PIXEL_RATIO exvironment variable.
Try setting it to either auto or 2 or some other number that suits your setup. As for plugins -- those you'll have to ask the plugin authors for help with. Most likely somewhere in there they have specified some sizes using absolute units, which will need to be changed to use responsive units. |

Is this High DPI thing the same I can switch to in Linux Mint (Cinnamon)?
Or using the slider to scale desktop items in Ubuntu? For those with a mole's eye. Buttons missing from the bottom of a dialog box, like storing a search expression in the editor. On windows currently, cannot provide screenshot. |

@eMole: I dont see how hiDPI issues could cause missing buttons, but a screen shot would be useful, so I know what you are talking about.
@rboatright: This commit should fix the issue of small icons in the preferences dialog: https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibr...a349e9afc3f05e You have ay other issues (non-plugin related) I will be happy to look into them. |

My bad, it was a false alarm. Sorry about that. Editor wasn't fully maximized, bottom went out of the screen.
(I might do something unusual. I use a television set as a monitor, watched as one supposed to watch TV: from a couple meters away. I need to enlarge the view or use a binocular.) |
