Restoring Calibre Library
After an upgrade to win10 I have had to reinstall Calibre. How do I move books from "Kindle for PC Library' back to Calibre. Been a while since I had used Calibre and am having a brain fade.!!

??
W10 upgrade left the Library folder. All I had to do was install Calibre, then point it at the existing Library ( I did resore the Calibre config folder from a backup so I had all my PI and settings) |

I have about 500 books sitting in my desktop "Kindle for PC - Library" and thought there was some way I could just put them all into Calibre in one hit.?

No. I installed Calibre and then wondered how I was going to get my books into it.

You did not have them in Calibre before W10? Oh Well Just COPY Just the BOOK format (there are other files with the books in the Kindle folder) files to another folder , then use add books from a single folder. The Alf PI takes care of any DRM |

Yes. I did have them in Calibre in Win7 but had a fresh install of Win10. I do have an Image of Win7 which has calibre but I am not sure how to restore a single Program like Calibre.

@Nicko - does your Win7 Image have your library and configuration folders on it? The default locations are
Library : Users\<your logon name>\Documents\Calibre Library Config : Users\<your logon name>\Appdata\Roaming\calibre If so then restore those files from the Image to the same locations. No need to restore calibre software, just reinstall latest version. If your login name is the same it should just work, if its different just use the Library icon->Switch create library to select the new location. If you had looked before you leapt you could have done this ==>> How do I move my calibre data from one computer to another? BR |

Just to be clear:
You don't need to restore the PROGRAM: Calibre. That is still just as you see it... Empty. What you have now is the BASE for the Library You restore the Library FOLDER (and all contents) Optionally: You also restore your settings (Calibre Preferences), unless you tricked out Calibre, this is way easier to reconstruct, if needed, than a Library |

Add the library to your list of libraries. See screenshots.

When I do that, I get "Choose your Calibre Library"
"Your calibre library is currently located at C:\users etc" but my current library is located in Kindle for PC on Desktop and in Onedrive. Am I now following your your instructions correctly.? |

Yes, just select the Onedrive library and add it... it really does not matter where your current library is, because you are trying to add a new one!
... Anyway, C:\Users etc is the start of any filepath to files/folders you own, (except the ones on external hard drives) on account of it being the location of your user folder. |

Thanks for trying to help, but I am still having trouble following the procedure.
I go into OneDrive and I can click on Calibre Library and that lists all the books, or if I right click on Calibre Library it brings up a list of options none of which help. Can you explain in detail how I proceed from this point please. I am getting a bit long in the tooth so I need all the help I can get. Thanks in advance. I found that you have to export from Calibre on the old computer and then import that into Calibre on the new computer. See here:
<http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq.html#how-do-i-move-my-calibre-data-from-one-computer-to-another>http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq....ter-to-another And just know, anyone who is trying to do same: from what I've read everywhere, stay working within Calibre when you change, move, delete things. I mean: don't go outside of the program, move files, delete files, etc. Just messes you up. So, don't try to go into your Windows Explorer (or wherever) and copy or move files (like I mistakenly did a few times). Instead, use the Export feature inside Calibre and the Import feature after. (And don't do as I have done, delete books outside the program.) Make the program work for you and it is easier all the way around. AND DO NOT USE 'add books'... that is for books themselves that you want to bring in... When moving a library, you want to bring in all the stuff you've setup prior...like all the metadata, etc. So, avoid Add Books when moving a collection/library. What you really want to move is the database itself and using Import and pointing Calibre to yours is the way to do. Good luck. Keep it simple. Read the Help link above. |
