epub words glue together
Hello,
In all my epubs, I noticed that in some lines there is no more space between words and so, they are glued together, like one word. Any idea of the option I have to modify to get that right ? I also noticed that happens only on the lines which follow an hyphen like this (in french) : «*sensation fraîches d’un homme de la cam- pagneet je ne pouvais me résigner à rompre*» Could it be related to the & shy ; hyphens presents in some of my epubs ? Have you tried removing the soft hyphens from a book which shows the problem and seeing if that fixes it?

Yup, it seems to resolve the problem...
But i need the soft hyphens in nickel and I don’t really want to maintain two calibre databases... |

It might be something in the French Hyphenation dictionary?

Hi Ken,
The french hyph dic seems to run alright on koreader (and i mean very alright - far better than the nickel one) when there is no shy hyphen. But to resolve a lot of issues with hyphen on nickel I had the habit to put shy hyphens on nearly all my books and disable the algorithm (using the hyphenate this plugin with calibre). It’s not really a problem to remove them (just a matter of time). And it really seems to be the source of the problem. No reader seems to ignore them (the shy char) at this time. With soft hyphen the dictionary searches are broken on nickel - and on korearder, it’s the space between words (but i don’t really need a french dictionary anyway). I’m removing them right now to make a good comparaison. Last edited by cramoisi; 07-20-2016 at 09:13 AM. |

You don't need soft hyphens with your Kobo. What you need to do to get better hyphenation results is to look at the hyphenation dictionary and see the settings in the hyphenation dictionary is too big (like it is with the US hyphenation dictionary) and fix it.
The problem is that Code:
LEFTHYPHENMIN 5 RIGHTHYPHENMIN 5 |

Hi
I never felt the need to use on Koreader something other that selecting the plain French hyphenation rules which work quite correctly. I used once "hyphenate this" before converting an EPUB to azw3 but that has been my only try so far. I never experienced glued words -as a chronic disease- except for some few out of scan occurrences. |

Hi,
@JSWolf, in the firmware the default setting for french are 2 and 3 which is quite ok ; but i already modified them to 2 and 2 some time ago. Anyway, the way nickel uses the hyphenation dic is bad (the dic itself is alright (or at least, was alright each time I checked the rules after finding an error) and I really can’t stand it). Hyphenate this ! does the job right but it’s tedious and I don’t like to introduce shy hyphens everywhere in my books. So I tested Koreader which is OK. I just needed to remove the soft hyphens and it’s done. I’ll spend the summer with it, I’ll see. @Roger64 - yup, Koreader will do the trick. Really quicker with pdf but somewhat slower with some of my biggest epub (like the one with all balzac’s work in one epub : bad idea) |

@JSWolf : Thanks a lot ! I can’t understand how I managed to miss this post. I’ll try it right now.

- Koreader has a much better PDF reader than the one we find by default on the Kindle. - For EPUB, it suffers from some defects (some missing css properties, an uncomplete image display) but gives good service for most of the books except the most complex ones. For these reasons, when I have a complex EPUB to read (with an intricate display, many images of different kinds, etc.), I have rather converting it with one click as a six inches PDF with the Prince PDF plugin we find with Sigil (which also provides excellent hyphenation): just open the EPUB with Sigil, menu "Greffon/Sortie/Prince PDF and you have it. Then, the css display is the most precise and complete I know of. This solution though can't be generalized because the font-family, line-height and font-size values can't later be modified but it may be perfect if it fits your personal reading choices. So it's a personal solution not a general one. Last edited by roger64; 07-21-2016 at 02:38 AM. |
