A big thank you and two metadata behevior suggestions

First of all, I want to say THANK YOU to the developer of Calibre, the plugin creators and all the support people here in this forum. You all make my reading life a lot easier to handle.

I have two suggestions for Calibre, which I have not found here. I may have used the wrong search Terms, so please point me in the right direction if this is the case.

Suggestion A: Predefined possible values for custom columns

I have a custom column to store genre information in it. There are more than 30 possible genres and every book can be in more than one. I created a dummy book entry that is a member of every genre to populate the possible values for this custom column.
It would be great to be able to define default values without the need for a dummy book. It would also be great to have an option to lock down the selection of values for a custom column only to the predefined list of values, so that no manual creation in the metadata editor is possible.

Suggestion B: Search in colums not "<search string>*" but "*<search string>*"

One of the Genres in my custom custom column is "health_sport_fitness". It would be great if the metadata editor would not only propose this entry when typing "health", but also when just entering "sport" or "fit" - in other words, not a search for x*, but for *x*.

Thanks in advance,

GruberMa

GruberMa,

calibre already has this functionality. Here's a tips and tricks tutorial which demonstrates the method:

http://blog.calibre-ebook.com/2011/1...m-columns.html

From there, a simple search for #genre:sport should return 'health_sport_fitness'

Hi TiePin,

For the genre custom column, I decided against the steps described in the tutorial as every book can be in multiple genres and I did not want to create multipe genre custom columns.

Is there a known way to prepopulate a list of values for a custom column and then be able to not only select one but multiple entries from this list?

The proposed search string only works in calibres main window, the behavior within the metadata editor is different. Let's stick with the "Health_Sport_Fitness" genre that is one of may. When I type "Hea", the genre is proposed as a selectable option, but not when I type "spo" or "*spo*".

Search within the metadata editor only happens for "<search text>*", not for "*<search text>*" - is there a known way to change this?

2) In Preferences ==> Advanced ==> Tweaks:

Code:
#: Completion mode when editing authors/tags/series/etc.
# ID: completion_mode
# By default, when completing items, calibre will show you all the candidates
# that start with the text you have already typed. You can instead have it show
# all candidates that contain the text you have already typed. To do this, set
# completion_mode to 'contains'. For example, if you type asi it will match both
# Asimov and Quasimodo, whereas the default behavior would match only Asimov.
completion_mode = 'prefix'
