Linking a book to its translation

Hello,

I have alot of books in more than one language and I would like to link the book to its tranlation (I want a link in the book info panel on the right that I can click on that either brings me to the translation or opens a search where only this book is displayed in all available languages (like with the tags)).
Do any of you kow a good way of doing that?

Not really

IMHO It is a good 'wishlist' item that is not limited to Translations.

I have a Master Format column. If I have entered: Lnk, that tells me to read all the book Comment details.
The book record may be an 'Empty Book' whose purpose is to send me to a Omnibus edition that contains the book title. (Not all books can or should be split)

Right-click Similar...

OR (the tool I keep forgetting to use )
Quickview (Q)
Place the cursor on the Author field, tap Q (works on Series Also)

GUI Tool "Extract Original Title/Translator to Update Custom Columns [EPUBS]

@cathlyn:

This is what I did:

  • Created a Custom Column called #original_title
  • Ran the GUI Tool "Extract Original Title/Translator to Update Custom Columns [EPUBS]" which is part of the tool box plug-in Job Spy. It is called Job Spy because its first tool was Job Spy, but it has 20 Tools, only one of which relates to jobs.
  • Created a Virtual Library with the criterion of "#original_title:true".
  • Created a View Manager View that was customized for that Virtual Library.
  • Used the GUI Tool called "Apply View Manager View Based Upon Virtual Library" to automatically switch to the proper View whenever I select that particular Virtual Library.
  • Whenever the "title" was really the "#original_title" because it was the "original language", I used Bulk Edit Metadata to copy the 'title' to '#original_title' so it would link to its translations.
The MultiColumnSearch plug-in also has an Inter-Book Search Query capability originally created to deal with "#original_title". The ToolTip for that pushbutton on the first Tab is attached below.

My approach (a bit redundant and not automatic enough, as you'll see - I may perfection it at some point but all in all, it works just fine):

I have two custom columns:
1) a yes/no column, called #original. There I mark whether the book is an original version or a translation.
2) a series-like text column, called #translations (although #original_title would probably make more sens as the name of the column).
In this column, I enter the original title for all translated books. I also enter it for those non-translated books, whose translations I have in my library. I don't enter the original title for non-translated books as I find it redundant (but this means I have to add it if I happen to add a translated book later on).
A book plus its translations are like a series, and you can always see all the language versions if you click on the original title in the book details.
In hindsight, I would use a regular column, not a series-like as the order of books is not really all that relevant (I might modify that later).

I also have a customized table view (created with the plugin View Manager), which shows #translations as the first column, than the language column (no text, just flags) and the #original column (plus the others). In the view, a saved search is applied (#translations: true) - so that's similar to DaltonST's virtual library.

Plus, I have a user category called 'multilingual', where I manually add all the translation series with more than one item (i.e. if I have more than one language version of one book). The category is shown in the Tag Browser and this way I can easily access the 'multilingual' books. I wish this last step was more automatic, though.

I add translated edition(s) as a separate book(s). I put a folder link into a Notes column between the translations and what I regard as the original edition, and folder link(s) into the original edition's Notes to the translation editions.

Notes is a long text column which I display in the Book Details sidebar. In the book list I cloak the Notes column with an icon, which varies according to the content of the Notes

Translator(s) is a separate column like Authors.

I include the translator in in the Authors field (and sometimes, the Author does the translation so
there is no (trans) entry)

Joe Writer & Mary Scribe (trans)

I use a 3's the limit rule (because {Authors} is in my device filename template)
I put the Editors name, standalone when there are more than 2 Authors
Jack Dann (ed) I have another 'authors' type field that gets use for those names as well as pen names

Other names that I put into {authors}
Tom Clancy (creator)

YMMV but now you have IDEAS

The easiest trick is probably to use the original title as a series name.
