Losing the chapter skipping feature on my Paperwhite after converting to AZW3
Hello,
I'm converting a few books (mostly .mobi to .azw3). I guess like most people on this site, I like to convert/edit my books a certain way. I usually trim everything but the main text, which means I remove all the table of contents pages, indexes, cover images, appendix, etc., and I just stick with the actual chapters. The only problem I run into is losing the functionality of the jumping from chapter to chapter on my Kindle Paperwhite. When I try to skip a chapter or go back to the other chapter, it just takes me to the first chapter. I've been fooling around with it, and it looks like the only way I can keep the chapter skipping function when converting from another format (which includes just AZW) to AZW3 is if I keep the table of contents page (that is at least the case for this one book I'm trying to edit). I've tried generating the ToC using the built in tool and they all point to a certain entry. Do I have to convert to AZW3, then convert back to .mobi or whatever format the book was in? Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, when I edit a book already in AZW3 format (no conversions), I can remove everything I want (including the ToC page), and the chapter skipping works just fine. |

You should be fine as long as the semantic ToC (appears in the Go To menu) exists.

Not sure what "Go To" menu you are talking about? On Calibre or the Kindle?

On the Kindle...
It is built from the semantic ToC. In the calibre E-Book Viewer it is the navigation menu on the left. You can use the ToC Editor to modify it. The Kindle will allow you to skip from location to location in the ToC, but it has to be properly linked. ... The HTML Table of Contents is nothing but an HTML file with clickable links. It has no special meaning whatsoever... although I am unsure if calibre has an option to suppress it when converting. Last edited by eschwartz; 05-26-2016 at 10:15 AM. |
