Is it possible to use the Kindle as a WiFi extender/hotspot?

Not using 3G, but using WiFi and extending the distance…

Yes, but you may need to port OpenWRT (or dd-wrt) to the kindle in order to accomplish that (or borrow portions of its source code). It would be a huge effort of love to do such a thing, but it would certainly be a welcome addition to our community if you choose to put in such an effort.

Perhaps just porting bits and pieces from OpenWRT to our Kindle development efforts would be simplest, just as we have done with portions of the NSLU2 optware project.

In the case of OpenWRT, rebuilding from source would be the easiest route, because most OpenWRT binaries are mipsel instead of armel (different SoC instruction set). And FYI, I plan to port my OpenWRT mmc.ko module from OpenWRT to the kindles at some point, so I can support SD cards using a few stray I/O pins (by attaching wires to existing LEDs and switches), just like we did on OpenWRT routers:

Not without building the Kernel module for that use.
And possibly not then, not all Linux wifi drivers have the entry points required.

Although you will find that some Linux distributions (for PEN testing) will carry patches for the drivers of many different wifi hardwares.

Those patches will probably never make it into main-line Linux, since they can be used for MiM attacks.
(Such as extending someone else's Wifi over to your place, where you can use it. )

Ah, come on now! Those patches won't let you corkscrew bittorrent over Whispernet, so what's the problem?
