Nook 1st Ed using touchscreen as mouse? (for android apps, VNC)

Hello, i'm relatively new to ebook readers and picked up an old Nook 1st edition - the one with the eink top and the small color 'touchbar' on the bottom. I plan to mostly use it for ebooks for now but was curious for future projects what else I could do with it.

Namely I thought it would be about the slickest 'home automation' display you could have. I'd actually prefer the eink normal display since it's always on and uses no power until it changes, over a 7 inch tablet PC or something. So whats what i'm wondering about.

Apparently any Nook can be used as a VNC viewer, including how people are setting them up to work as screens for raspberry pi and such, though this is only part of my interest. My question was has anyone gotten any input ability working as a VNC monitor? Like using the touchbar to work as a touchscreen.

Can 'general' android apps work on the Nook, taking into account it's early version, low RAM, and lack of a full height touchscreen? Will it at least accept input on the bottom bar?

Since I don't even use wifi believe it or not, I haven't yet even tried to browse the web with it. I know it can work though. Might it be possible to simply display a 'home automation webpage' of some sort that could accept input from the touchbar at the bottom by formatting the page correctly? (i'm not sure offhand what this would be, just thinking out loud)
