Saving Conversion Settings

I know Calibre will save conversion settings on a per book basis and the default settings can be changed, but is there a way I can save the settings to a separate file all together?

What -- you mean, backing up the per-book record saved conversion settings?

No. It isn't even backed up in the metadata_db_prefs_backup.json

Maybe the OP means for future reuse - as in Export and Import Settings, I think I looked/asked for this a long time ago. I solved it via multiple libraries.

The defaults from Preferences are saved globally in your $CALIBRE_CONFIG_DIRECTORY
The standard instructions for switching to a new computer will migrate that.

how did switching to a new computer get in on the act .

My special conversion libraries are calibre portable folders that share the Calibre folder via a symlink and the calibre-portable.exe via a hardlink, they each have there own Calibre Library and Calibre Settings folders. I update the 'master' Calibre portable every tenth release. I don't keep books in them I just convert in them using the default, but different, files in each Calibre Settings folder. They each service different sources - eg I have s series of them for central banks reports - ECB, OldLady, TheFed, RBoC, RBA etc.

Actually even if there was an Export/Import I might still prefer to do it this way - its more-or-less foolproof. and the storage overhead for each instance is a mere 138KB.

The operative part was Instructions, As in how to find the config files

Per book (last conversion) settings are in metadata.db. They are not in human readable form (in the conversion_options table)

Maybe someone could make a 'document settings' PI to output a CSV or XML file (for a selected book)

Say I find the magic bullet to convert TheFed's Open Market reports from PDF into something readable, which is a different bullet to doing the same to the BoE FPC reports. Its all very well to save the settings with this months reports but how do I reuse them next month.

Its alright tho', I fulfilled my wish procedurally as previously outlined.
