Calibre won't detect the SD card in my Kobo H20

Hi

I have a Kobo H20 with an SD card. Up until a week or so back Calibre on my pc detected both the main storage and the SD card fine but now Calibre doesn't see my SD card. The card works fine in the Kobo and Calibre on my husbands machine sees both the main storage and the card, its just a problem on my pc.

Windows sees both main storage and SD Card its just Calibre that doesn't. Does anyone have any ideas why Calibre doesn't see it anymore?

I'm running 2.5.3

Have you looked at the sticky post in the devices subforum dealing with calibre not detecting my device.

Please post the logs you obtain from those steps.

I didn't know there was a sticky post so no I haven't followed those steps yet, I'd need to locate the post first.

Right now I have one port on my laptop that is detecting the SD card in my Kobo, the port that I kept reserved for the mouse. I'm currently emptying the SD card.

I found the post but I just wondered why I would follow those steps as Calibre is detecting the device just not the SD card on two usb ports on my PC (since my initial post I've discovered it is detected on the third port)

I found the thread posted in Feb where the poster talked about removing usb links but I'm reluctant to start playing around in case I do any damage.

I had a similar problem some time ago. It was caused by a faulty USB device. It helped to remove the USB devices registered in Windows. I can check for the name of the software I used tomorrow.

Thank you, it was your thread I found. I've uninstalled two generic ones and am restarting. I don't trust myself to delete any of the others.

There's no harm. Next time you plug in a device Windows will just install the necessary drivers.

This is what is on the sticky post:-

In calibre, go to Preferences->Ignored Devices and check that your device is not being ignored
In calibre, go to Preferences->Plugins->Device Interface plugin and make sure the plugin for your device is enabled, the plugin icon next to it should be green when it is enabled.
If all the above steps fail, go to Preferences->Miscellaneous and click debug device detection with your device attached and post the output in this forum

I can't find Ignored Devices but as Calibre is seing my Kobo I don't think that is relevant anyway.

I can't find Device Interface plugin either, but again Calibre is detecting my Kobo

The last step, Debug Device Detection. That won't run as my Kobo is detected, so I'm not sure what you want me to do now.

I have uninstalled all my USB controllers but the problem still exists, in fact its now worse as none of my 3 USB ports see the SD card. Calibre sees my Kobo but not the SD Card installed, even though the SD card is detected by Windows and works perfectly.

In my case, it was a mouse that was plugged into a USB PS2 adapter. It messed up several programs on my system. Maybe it could help to unplug all other USB devices and check for errors with each one.

I only have the mouse plugged into a USB port, my pc is 5 years old so I assume the ports are just USB 2. My Device Manager says all ports are working normally.

As its just an issue with Calibre and not windows I'll have to use hubbys machine to transfer books to my SD card, all of the solutions i've googled assume windows can't see the SD card and it can.

It's annoying but not much else I can do. It's that or abandon using an SD card in my Kobo.

Open the calibre preferences. "Ignored device" is the last item on the fourth row of icons.

Again in the preferences, click the "Plugins" button icon. This is the first item on the last row of icons. In the next window, look for "Device Interface plugins" in the list. Click the plus in front of it to expand the list of device drivers. In the expanded list, look for "Kobo". You should "Kobo Reader Device Interface" and "KoboTouch". You might also have "KoboTouchExtended". There should not be another device driver with "Kobo" in it's name. If you do, that is a problem. It is unlikely to be the cause of the problem, but it will probably cause other issues.

"Kobo Reader Device Interface" is for older devices and you can ignore it.

If you have both "KoboTouch" and "KoboTouchExtended" installed, only one should be enabled. That means the jigsaw puzzle piece in front of it will be green. The disabled one will be grey and the text will be grey. For the problem you are seeing, it doesn't matter which you have enabled.

If you only have the "KoboTouch" driver, it must be enabled for calibre to communicate to the current Kobo devices properly.
Quote:

That is good and expected. Because the device is detected, the detection instructions won't work to show what is happening with the SD card. So that we can see the device detection log, you need to temporarily disable the driver. Go back to the plugins mentioned above, and disable whichever Kobo driver you are using. Then restart calibre, connect the device and run the detection. Then post the log.

After you have the log, re-enable the driver and restart calibre in debug mode to produce a debug log. This is done by right clicking on the preferences button and selecting "Restart calibre in debug mode". Calibre will restart and display a message about debug mode. Then, connect the device and let the connection jobs run. When they are finished, close calibre. The debug log will be displayed. Post the full log for me to look at. I'm not really expecting to find anything, but I want to eliminate possibilities.

One thing that is missing from your report is the version of Windows you are running. I suspect it is Windows 10. But, it would be good to confirm this.

Some other things to check:
- Can you write to the SD card from Windows?
- Is a drive letter being allocated to the card?
- Can you do a chkdsk on the card while it is in the device and connected?

Hi David, thanks for posting

I'm running Windows 7
The SD card is detected by Windows and has a letter (G), my Kobo is (F)
chkdsk said no problems found
Yes I can write to the drive. I added and deleted a folder to test this.
Ignored Devices - neither my Kobo nor the SD card are listed.
Plugins - I have Kobo Reader Device interface 1.0.0, Kobo Touch 2.1.11 and Kobo Touch Extended 2.5.3. No other Kobo plugin.

You said ''So that we can see the device detection log, you need to temporarily disable the driver. Go back to the plugins mentioned above, and disable whichever Kobo driver you are using. Then restart calibre, connect the device and run the detection. Then post the log""

I have no idea what driver I am using so how can I determine which plugin to disable?

David I went back and read your post again

You said ''If you have both "KoboTouch" and "KoboTouchExtended" installed, only one should be enabled. That means the jigsaw puzzle piece in front of it will be green. The disabled one will be grey and the text will be grey. For the problem you are seeing, it doesn't matter which you have enabled."

On my laptop both plugins are green.

Calibre has always been set up like this, it's only from this week that Calibre on my laptop doesn't see my SDCard.

I checked on hubbys laptop, which does see the SDCard inside the Kobo, and that is set up in the same way as mine, both the Kobo Touch and the Kobo Touch extended plugins are green. He is running Claibre 2.5.3 same as me.
