Epub versus mobi sizes (and a free, bonus download)

I've just downloaded an anthology that goes by the rather boring title of Up and Coming: Stories by the 2016 Campbell-Eligible Authors. I'd say that this is a must-download for SF and Fantasy fans. It is free and, as far as I can see, perfectly legal; but you do need to get your skates on - it's only available until the end of this month.

It is also massive, about 1.1 million words (which comes to 4400 pages at 250 words per page). But what intrigues me are the relative sizes of the epub and mobi versions. The epub version is 3.2 MB but the mobi version is four times the size at 12.3 MB. Now, I'm aware from converting the occasional epub to mobi in Calibre that the mobi version always ends up rather larger. But four times larger - this does seem rather extreme! Can anyonone explain the difference?

Where did you download it from? If it's a self-created Mobi the creator may have left all the source files in the book. That's the default behaviour of "Kindlegen".

The mobi-container contains both a mobi-format and azw3-format, that's why it's so large.

After unpacked: mobi 4.2 MB, azw3 5.2 MB.

Ok, so it's a dual Mobi. That explains it.

For people looking into this: The Campbellian Anthology is an ebook featuring short stories by new authors.

There was one in 2013 and 2014. Submissions were gathered for 2015, but the anthology got cancelled. This one linked here is the 2016 one.

The 2013 and 2014 versions were available for download at some point, but aren't any longer; not at the official site that is. Other sites may still have them, and the WayBack Machine can also be of help.

edit: I've just checked. It is still possible to track down the 2014 and 2013 anthologies but as they are unavailable officially, I doubt I'm allowed to post direct links.

This thing is huge. Using my own page-count, 2100 characters per page, these are the sizes:

2013: 1063 pages
2014: 2479 pages
2015: (none published)
2016: 3356 pages

It's hard to track the Campbellian Anthology, as it's not published by the same people each time.
