M91S won't boot

Hi all,

Someone asked me to try to fix a M91S that won't boot.

I'm unsure how the device got in this state; according to the owner it just stopped working.

The progress bar on the bottom of the screen fills up all the way, but then nothing happens.

The reset button is working.

The device does detect update zip's on the sd card, but then always says "no update available, starting device.." , after which nothing happens anymore.

I did find a few mentions of similar problems on the M92, but all the links to update-20120309.zip that is supposed to fix it, are dead. And i suppose M92 zip's won't work on the M91S anyway?

Any ideas?

thanks!

Hi,
Verify that you have the good update for your device : version + vendor.
Check the SDcard's filesystem, remove all file before, better format it. But be careful, there is a standard way to format a SDcard. Take a common size for the SDcard : 4, 8; 18 GB.

Make a full charge of the device, reset the device, shut-down it properly. And try again with your fresh SDcard and the update file : put only the zip file on the SDcard, don't unzip it.

Thanks for your reply

Just tried this (again); same result as before. It says "Software update request detected, checking updates" followed by "No update available, starting device..." and then nothing.

I suppose that it's not the good version of update. The process seems good, the file is checked, but there is no valid information the device. Are you sure to use a valid file for you device, take care that some devices sold by some vendors are "attached/locked" to those vendors. I couldn't take the first file found for the M91s probably. For the M92, it's the case with the international version sold by Booxtor and the polish version sold by ArtaTech.

The firmware i'm trying to use is from https://onyx-boox.com/support/firmware/ .

On the back of the device this text is printed:
Model: BOOX M91s DC 5V 1A
www.onyx-international.com

Unfortunately, i can't find M91S firmware on www.onyx-international.com .

Sorry, but all device have the same text. The important is what is the vendor ? A fast research on Internet let me think that your vendor is ArtaTech https://onyx-boox.com/support/firmware/, or may be you can look for a russian firmware.

The onyx-book.com firmware was the one i was trying to use.

The device was originally bought at http://www.e-readerweb.nl/ .

Just tried the russian firmware from http://onyx-boox.ru/ . Same result..

I did now. They refered me to onyx-international.com, which doesn't have the firmware for this model on their site anymore. They suggest i should look around on the unofficial support forums

Onyx International says they no longer have the firmware.

Anyway, i managed to install the latest firmware from onyx-boox.com. Turns out that for the M91S , you need to put the extracted .UPX file on the SD card instead of the ZIP.

The firmware was installed succesfully. It changed the image on the splash screen. Unfortunately, the device still doesn't complete the boot process. The progress bar fills, and then nothing happens anymore.

The device is normally booting if you don't try to pass the update ? or it's now a "paperweight" ?

It's basically a paper weight. It never comes past the 'splash' screen with the progress bar.

Bad news

So you couldn't loose something if you try the solutions used for the M92 in this situation. Something like MFG tool, can help, look in the old post for the M92 or the Wiki for M92.

You could search for the words "paperweight", "brick", "MFG".

Sorry, I can't search the revelant threads for you for the moment, my main computer is down for a week now...

I've been searching around on the forum and google for a couple of hours, but most of the mfgtool info seems to be written for kindle devices.

Found one thread with a download for the M92: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=235195

Unfortunately my windows 8 pc is unable to find the correct drivers for the M91S, so it won't show up in mfgtool.

My linux pc does recognize the device when in download mode, but there's no mfgtool for linux, only imx_usb_loader, a command line tool that can directly flash binary files. I wouldn't know what file to flash.

I'm affraid i'll just have to give up and tell the owner to buy a new e-reader.

Thanks a lot for your help though!
