Kobo glo hd epub stays unread

Hi all,

I just purchased my first ereader; the kobo glo hd.
I have some issues that may have to do with my inexperience.

I have quite a few epubs I transferred via my laptop via usb to the root of the kobo.
When I look at my library on the kobo I see all the books and I can open them and read them. But when I go back to the library it shows no progress so I can't see which book I've read or which ones I'm reading at the moment.
Also when I make a collection and I add books and press save the collection will be empty, no way to add books.
Since I read more than one book at a time it's pretty useless now since I have no way to see which books I'm currently reading and what my progress is.

Anyone that can makes sense of this? Device is fully updated.

Those are usually signs of a corrupt database on the device. The database contains details of all the books, the reading status and collections.

The simple fix is to sign out of the Kobo account and then follow the prompts to sign in and set up the device again. The sideloaded books will be added to the database again.

If this doesn't work, do a factory reset. And as this is a new device, I would be tempted to do this and then do the full setup.

What davidfor said... plus this: if you intend to manage your books with collections, I strongly recommend taking the time to set them up in Calibre, and then let Calibre manage the collections on your device. Once you're over the setup/learning curve, things are much easier and your library will be far more manageable as it grows.

I second the suggestion of Calibre. It plays rather well with Kobo devices, and makes managing ebooks really easy once you've gotten familiar with how it works.

And the most likely cause/easiest way to avoid getting a corruption of your database is to make sure you use the "SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE" option to stop the device before unplugging it from the USB on your computer. Most devices and USB sticks don't require this these days, but the Kobo e-readers are prone to errors if you just pull it out without stopping it.

I agree. I have been victimized more than once for not 'Safely removing' my device, and corrupted the database.

YThanks for the answers.
I will try this tonight and I will do a factory reset.

I also used kobo desktop but although it shows there's some space occupied it doesn't show any books there.
I was wondering if I did the copying right: I plug it in the usb port and then copy paste the books just in the root. There are 3 folders in the root but I couldn't find a logic place to copy the books thee so that's why I've put them in the root.
I will definetly try calibre. Can I load books from there to my kobo glo?

The usb safely removal option doesn't seem logical to me. It is true this was needed up to windows 2000 but from windows xp windows will shut down a connection to a usb device when its not needed and will connect to it again when needed. In windows 2000 and lower this wasn't the case so potentially if you pulled out the usb device while windows was just writing to it there was a danger of corrupting the file system. Windows 10 doesn't even have a safe removal option as far as I know it.

Kobo desktop will only show content download from Kobo; either directly to the device via WiFi or via USB from Kobo Desktop. Material loaded either via calibre, ADE or direct copying to the device will NOT be seen in Kobo Desktop.

I would definitely suggest creating a directory (aka folder) to save your sideloaded ebooks into.

Calibre will handle managing your sideloaded ebooks on your Kobo. Personally, I find Calibre one of the most useful programs I have.

Just checked on Win10 x64 and safely eject is still there. It's also there in a VM with the 14271 preview build. My personal experience is that I have tried to safely eject devices on several occasions and been informed the device could not be safely ejected at this time. For my Kobo, I've been using the Smart Eject plugin for Calibre.

I would also recommend using Calibre for the management. Ejecting properly is also very important. The internal database is very fragile to sudden disconnect, another reason to be using Calibre.

Hi all,

Problem is solved after a a factory reset!
I love Calibre! It's not that difficult and I love the contentserver. I can now easily access the ebook folder on my laptop and start reading from there, fantastic piece of software.

As to the recommendation for safe ejecting, it all really depends on what is happening. If you pull the cable out while the data is being written to the device, there will be problems. If you wait for a few minutes after copying those files, it will probably be OK as any caches will probably be flushed. The safe eject makes sure no device is currently using it and should do a flush for any cache involved and make sure the file system is closed cleanly. Nine times out of ten, just pulling the cable out will be OK. It's the tenth that causes the problem.

That works well, but it is more complicated than a standard USB memory stick and hence there are more things that could go wrong. And there have been some very strange interactions between the Kobo devices and different OSes.

And if you have never had a corrupted file or file system on a USB stick after just pulling it of your PC, then you are lucky. I definitely have. I would say it is happens less now than before, but it still happens. It is timing. If the OS has finished writing to the stick, flushed any caches and closed the file system, all will be OK. But, if it is the middle of writing, then there probably will be problems.

That's probably why it doesn't eject properly when done in windows.
With a usb stick it's quite easy. I simply wait when the led of the stick stops flashing and then I pull it out and in that way I didn't have any problems the past years.
It tested with a lot of copying yesterday and I have no problems at all now so I'm really happy with the glo. Reading in the dark with the light at the lowest works fantastically. Does the light affect battery life much as its only 5 small leds as far as I can tell at the bottom. I have wifi disabled.
