Backing Up Fire HD 10 - Advice Needed

I'm a bit confused about the 'automatic backup' system for the Fire HD 10. The online guide talks about being able to do a 'Manual Backup' but I can't find it anywhere. I've had the 'Automatic Backup' switch turned on since since I bought the Fire two months ago, but when I go to turn it off, I'm warned that this will delete my backup. Then, when I go to check on my Amazon Cloud Drive, I can see all my old photographs backed up, but not my settings, apps, etc. Are they really there? How can I be sure that I have a full backup in case I have to perform a reset? Would love to hear from HD 10 users who have the new version 5 Android OS.

I'd like to hear from anyone at all, who has any version of the Kindle Fire. My original problem was the intermittent working of my USB cable (sending files from Calibre to the device) which had been working perfectly for the first two months I owned the Fire HD 10. But now I'd also like to know how the Amazon Cloud 'automatic backup' works, and how I can be sure that my apps and setting are really and truly backed up, in case I have to re-set the Fire. Would be great to hear from someone who has actually re-set any version of Fire. And there are a couple of other Fire mysteries I'm working on as well . . . Assistance very much appreciated.

I've used the backup / restore a few times, but I can't say with 100% certainty that all settings were restored. I know that things were, more or less, as expected, but it's not a 1-for-1 sort of backup. It's very similar in function (and limitation) to the standard Android backup function. I don't think it backs up any sideloaded apps / docs, for instance. Also, some apps have limits on what gets backed up. The Washington Post app bookmarks are not backed up, that's one I know for sure.

I have both an HD7 and HD8, for reference.

Thanks very much for that feedback. If I have to do a re-set, I have no worries about the books, of course, but really don't want to have to re-install all my apps and so forth. Yes, I might have guessed that anything like side-loaded apps might not be saved. Much appreciated.

Manual Backup of Fire HD 10

Thanks, Katie.

My books are all nicely backed up on my 3 TB drive. What I want to back up (or make sure is automatically backed up) are my Fire settings and apps.

The online Amazon help says that there's a 'Manual Backup' option, but I can't find it on my Fire HD 10, with the new Android 5 OS.

That's really the gist of my question . . . making sure apps and Fire settings are backed up, so that I can do a re-set without having to reinstall a million apps.

Can anyone else advise please? Am hoping to hear from some Fire tech experts.

'Manual Backup' Option on New Fires

CWatkinsNash, do you have the 'Manual Backup' option visible on your Fires?

No, it's not anywhere that I can find. It used to be on the same screen as the option to turn on automatic backup, but it isn't there anymore.

ALL those things Are Backed up thru Amazon & the Cloud. Silly to Waste space on the Device & Cloud by duplicating items purchased.

I'm guessing, then, that it disappeared with version 5 of the OS. Good to have that confirmation from you.

Explanation of 'Silliness'

Thanks again, Katie.

I explained my apparent silliness in a previous posting, but will repeat it again here. All the online Kindle/Fire help provided by Amazon refers to the 'Manual Backup' option on Fire, but this option now appears to have gone missing in the new version 5 OS.

Yes, I do know about the oval and the dot. When you 'throw the switch' with the new version 5 OS, you immediately receive the warning message that all your backups will be deleted. This warning would certainly give pause to the ordinary user . . .

However, being a computer pioneer since the 1970s, I boldly threw the switch anyway, fully expecting a 'Manual Backup' option to appear once the 'Automatic Backup' was turned off. But it didn't appear.

I would have been more comfortable, before doing a full reset of my Fire HD 10, to have performed a conscious and manual backup. Hence my question.

All my books are backed up twice. It's my Fire settings and apps that I would hope to have 'automatically' backed up. It appears that I simply have to trust that 'once a day' (when?) Amazon is doing this for me behind the scenes. Skeptic that I am, I would have liked to do my own manual backup of settings and apps and be sure of it.

This is why I keep asking these questions.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Well just got my Fire 10 about 2 weeks ago. Those are the only settings for Backup on there. How about transferring ALL the Apps & anything else you can to the Micro SD Card. Then Before you have to go back the Factory .. Un Mount & Take it out. Then at least that stuff wont need to be re-downloaded. It will be "Backed up"

LOL - I did the exact same thing last night before replying. I fully expected it to show up, and when it didn't, I felt... betrayed? "Why aren't you there? You're supposed to be there!"

Also, the settings menu name of "Backup & Restore" is a bit incorrect, since you can only restore on a new or just-reset device. There's no option in that menu to restore.

If you do a factory reset, you will have to reinstall your apps.

A factory reset reverts it back to its original condition.

I have had to factory reset my Fire once.
