Text to Speech
![]() My JB PRS-T1 is slowly giving up the ghost and I'm starting to look for a replacement. What I'm finding is that reader's don't have Text to Speech capabilities any more! This is soooo disappointing. It's one of the things that I've found on my reader that I've been relying heavily on. I love the fact that I can read my book and then when my eyes start to give out, I can just have my reader continue reading where I left off. Can you help recommend 6" readers with text to speech (I don't mind having to JB to get the functionality) that I can get in Canada, or import easily? I'm not worried about a light or any other fancy stuff. I just want to be able to read my book and have my reader read it to me as well. I don't want a tablet. I already have one and it's too hard on my eyes. Thanks everyone! Last edited by toomuchreading; 03-02-2016 at 07:56 PM. Reason: size of reader |

The Kindle Keyboard has it and there are lots still available on the likes of Ebay for decent prices.

True. Having owned both, though, it's perhaps worth noting that the Onyx has Ivona TTS, which is enormously better than the TTS on the K3 (it's the same TTS used on the Amazon Fire tablet range). It has a much better screen than the K3, too. Higher resolution and better contrast. And a frontlight too, of course.

Thanks Harry. I'll have to see how I can get one in Canada. Our exchange rate sucks right now especially being on a limited income...I'll make due until...
Thanks again. |

I can confirm the Kindle Keyboard (K3) has TTS. OP, have you considered getting an android device? Then you have even more software readers to choose from.

If a device is android or not doesn't matter to me as long as it has an e-ink screen an TTS. I can't deal with the tablet screens for reading books, because I read a lot. The tablet screens put too much of a strain on my eyes. The e-ink on the other hand, I can read for hours and hours...

The Ultra and Touch Lux are both Pocketbook readers. They are not sold within Canada. There are European vendors that will ship to Canada. I've ordered two ereaders from a French vendor without any problems. However, with the Canadian dollar so low now, it will not be cheap to buy from Europe.

The pocketbook touch lux ( lux 2 and 3 don't offer TTS) (PB623) is exactly what was requested: eink with Iwona TTS plus a bigger choice of voices than the same engine on Android

I didn't realize the newer models of the Touch Lux don't include TTS. That is disappointing.

Both don't list mp3 any longer as a supported format, no voices in download areas, lux 2 specs say nothing about audio out or speakers, the specs of 3 have the specific fields marked as "-" I have touch (sis has actually) and touch lux (me) so l know that the TTS before lux wasn't Iwona and the voices' names in lux download section hint that it is. The very same can be tested on ivonas web page (in case the OP doesn't trust us) and as said, for some languages the choice is even broader than android, even if not every PC version voice is available. |
