How much local storage is recommended?

Hi all,

I still use my PW2, and this morning a checked my local storage. The free space is 260MB.

When I saw how little that now is free space, I was surprised, but after thinking some seconds, I must admit I have quite a lot of books, also "side-loaded" ones.

But can a technically wise person please tell me whether this amount of storage is a critically small free space?

Thanks a lot in advance!

I would buy a New one & Only Sideload your books to that. You do need to freeup space some how. When mine hit 200 it refused to open any of the books on it. So I say this kindle is Full

Katie1 - thanks so much for your answer!

In fact, I recently had an "incidence" with my Kindle PW2, then without knowing how little free space that was left: It suddenly would not open from sleep, and I had to try and re-charge and reset it again and again (8-10 times, in fact) - and then I was lucky to see that it again opened and worked well. But it is now a bit slow.

I think I now will buy a Voyage, but I will prefer a black case like the (regular) one that I have for my PW2, with a magnet to turn it on and off.

Do you have any suggestions for a good case, similar to the PW-case?

The Kindle itself will say that it has low memory(the message even says to delete some items. At that point all you need to do is store some books in the cloud.
the device will still function...just will not allow notes.

I am pretty sure I've gone a bit lower than 200 MB on my Kindle Touch before getting the "Your Kindle is low on memory, please delete stuff now" warning.

The indexer requires a considerable amount of free space to run. I wouldn't recommend letting the free space get much lower than it is now, or you may have issues with newly-added books not being indexed.

Thank you all for informative posts.

Taking what you say into account, I think that the slow working - and perhaps also the periodic breakdown - of my PW2 probably is due to the small amount of free space.

During springtime or early summer I will buy a Voyage, but I dislike the case/cover that Amazon has chosen as a "standard". I will rather get one similar to the PW case.

When I had a PW2 I went right down to 0mb of free space and the device still functioned fine - I couldn't take notes but existing books on the device opened and functioned as usual.

I have been under a 100 MB also. At some point it will say that you can not take notes.
The device did not slow down.

I bought this case for my Voyage:
http://www.amazon.com/Swees%C2%AE-Am...rch_detailpage

It's very light and small. It fits perfectly. I use my Voyage without a case most of the time so it hasn't gotten that much use but what use it's had has been a bit rough and it's still like new.

Thanks for all inputs about the "state of affairs" regarding the PWs with little free space - and also thanks for suggestions about a case. It is not easy to remember the (better?) speed of the PW from its earlier days, but it is at least my impression today that my PW has been slower. However, it has never been super-fast, and perhaps because I now / these days am more accustumed to (spoiled rotten by) faster devices, like new iPads and a super-fast iPhone 6s plus, I experience my old PW2 as being slow.

Hello @mortenandersen...

If you actually want to buy a Voyage, then by all means do. I have a PW2 myself, and fully intend to buy a Voyage at some time in the future, perhaps after the rumoured new model becomes a reality.

However, for now, my Kindle is really very responsive, and a joy to use, because the bulk of my books are not on it, but rather stored in Calibre on my PC. I generally have 25-30 books in each of two collections (General and Juvenile), and when they have all been read, they are replaced by new collections from Calibre.

This approach has the added added advantage that sorting and cataloguing is hugely easier in Calibre than on the Kindle. Also, Calibre is free, and you can hold many more books there than you ever will on your Kindle. Calibre libraries numbering tens of thousands of volumes are not uncommon.

Calibre can be a good solution

I agree that Calibre can be a good way of dealing with my book collection. Now I have a huge number of books on my PW, and it's in fact difficult and/or time comsuming at the least to browse through page after page, a total of 81 pages in list view.

I have had some (limited) experience with Calibre on my desktop before. One thing I really disliked was the very frequent demand for upgrading to newer versions. But that has perhaps changed now, not demanding so frequent updates any longer (?) - it's a couple of years ago since I used Calibre.
