tapping on endnotes
Hi everyone!
I suppose this has been discussed before, if so, please, point me in the right direction The issue is: I have a Kobo Glo HD and I'm currently reading a book (Capital in the 21st century) in which endotes are marked in the main text using numbers which are linked to the actual endnotes, but when I tap on them, especially when they are in the page turning areas, most of the times it just turns the page, and doesn't take me to the linked endnote Thank you |

The issue is that for some ePub books, the size of the link's tap zone is the size of the link text itself, so unless the publisher has expanded the link to include more than a tiny superscripted number then you will need a very precise tap to activate the link.
In KePub books the tap zone is much larger, so large in fact that it sometimes extends to adjacent pages and is (IMO) easy to activate by mistake. If you have trouble with activating the links in ePubs some possible work-arounds are: * Use a stylus * Increase the font size * Convert the ePub book to KePub * Edit the ePub book to enlarge the link (this can be done without changing the appearance of the link in any way, but the area tapped to activate it can be made to extend to the whole word rather than just the superscriped number.) |

Thank you for your reply
So, I take it there's no software solution like tapping twice very fast, or pressing for a few seconds, or tapping on the menu area and then tapping again on the link, or maybe even reducing the page turning areas...? ![]() |

A possible (sucky) work around (if you want to stick with epub): (somehow) go to the first endnote, bookmark it, and than you can use bookmarks to get to the endnotes relatively fast/easily? I think the draw back to this may be that you will not be able to get the popup endnotes. Good luck. |

That's said with my devils advocate hat firmly on my head. But, it is an issue. Anything that Kobo does, will affect how the book looks and works. For example, if the book has three footnote links together after a word, how can you expand the link of any of them without affecting the others? Quote:

I just tried my Sony 650, and it has the same problem (both EPub and LRF). So, thank you Kobo (Access?) for providing a superior solution with kepubs. |

I am currently reading a book with many footnotes (endnotes) as well.
It works quite okay for me but that's because my Calibre is set up to filter pretty much all CSS styles, so what I have is actually something2 instead of something². So even though the endnote links are just numbers I still have a good chance of hitting em in no more than 3 tries ![]() I should mention though that I'm reading with a "comfortable" font size, the smaller you make it the harder it is to hit. Seriously though, I only half blame Kobo for this, the entire endnote concept is utter nonsense, hope it will work better for EPUB3. |

The real thing is that we are way beyond the point that a footnote link in an ebook, or any other electronic form, should look and behave like in a paper book. And the book authors/creators should be doing something different. And the software creators should be as well. Quote:

All IMO...

How long have ereaders and touch screens been around, and they still can't come up with a better solution? It is time to stop considering and do something. Until GeoffR mentioned the "too easily clickable endnote problem", I hadn't heard of anyone else complaining. I haven't even heard of anyone complaining about too easily clickable inline table of contents links, and those are HUGH. ![]() Quote:

I blame touchscreens, or touchscreen-only interfaces. The good old Cybook Gen 3 had a 4-way button, clicking up and down would cycle through all the links in the current page, easy enough to select the note and visit it. It also meant you could keep your finger on the page forward button and read comfortably.

The last ebook I did for the MR library had 302 end notes. And (perhaps with practice) I could make them work on all of my ebook devices including Kobo Glo. I think the key solution is to use a stylus, and learn what force and location works for each reader.
I set the link at 75% of the font size, and put the end note number in square brackets. |

There are several 'stylus pens' available in Launceston which have a small soft rubber ball on one end. I don't have any brand names I'm afraid. And my wife has a small plastic stylus with a soft rubber ball on one end, but again I've no idea what brand it is.
Sony used to provide years ago a big metal stylus, but as it didn't have a rubber ball on the end I don't recommend it even if it's still available. |

My Sony T1 came with plastic stylus with ball end about 1/8 inch diameter, (.135 inch, 3.429 mm). It doesn’t work with any of my Kobo readers because of small diameter.
