DRM Info
I`m a new member and I hope I have posted this in the right area.
I`ve just come across this DRM restriction thing and I would like to know how it is affecting (if at all) members who down load e books? I`ve had DRMs on two of my downloads and was disappointed because they seemed good reads. Can`t the sellers and other providers let you know before downloading and in cases paying for an ebook only to find it is unavailable to you because of DRMs? I saw that there is a DRM removal tool somewhere, but there must be a better solution. |

If you're downloading books from the places you bought them, you should be able to read the books on whatever tool they offer, even if it's limited to your computer/tablet.
If you're talking about downloading books that you didn't purchase, and they happened to have DRM, you'll want to avoid discussing it here. Admitting to piracy will get you banned. Members at Mobileread cannot provide detailed instructions for DRM removal, although we do talk about it alot. You can google apprentice alf for details on tools for books you've purchased. |

If you would buy books from sites compatible with your device, you wouldn't have this problem.

I think the reason they don't warn you about DRM is because almost every ebook from most sellers has DRM and they assume you either already know or, if you're new, you're buying a book for a device registered to their books.
My guess is that all but 13 or 14 people in the world already know about DRM and now that you do that's even further reduced. ![]() If you bought the book from Amazon for a non-Kindle app or device they make it real simple to return the book for a refund within 7 days of purchase. If you bought it from someone else you might give them a call and explain to them. You might or might not get a refund. If you want more information you probably should give us more information. What device do you want to use to read the book? Where did you buy it? If that device is the correct device is it registered to the correct account? Barry |

How it affects me: I never buy books from iBooks. Having installed and configured the appropriate third-party DRM removal tools, I now happily buy from Kobo, Amazon, and a variety of places that sell ADE epubs, importing them into my ebook library as I go.

I want to thank everyone for replying altho` some of the contributions e.g. from susan cassidy and FizzyWater and statements like 13 out of 14 people know about DRM raises questions.
I (ignorant as I may be) knew nothing about DRMs . My local library was happy to make thousands of free ebooks available to me. There was also many free sites doing this. Now I find it is whispered about and not paying for all your boooks and their DRMs is like some antisocial misbehavior. But I`m learning and love my Kobo |

Not a problem; staying ignorant by not asking questions, that is a problem. When in doubt, ask away. The main thing when paying for ebooks is to only pay at reputable stores. Depending on your locality, those might include the big guys (Amazon, Apple, Kobo, Google) or local players like Nook or Tolino, etc... There are also a lot of scammers trying to sell books they don't have the right to sell but those almost always are DRM-free, so in a sad and annoying way, DRM is most often a badge of legality. ![]() Now, library ebooks are a different category because they're not sold, only loaned, and only meant to be read on approved devices and applications, which varies from system to system and publisher to publisher. Removing DRM from books you buy outright for personal use is generally considered Fair Use (though not strictly legal or illegal in all locations--it is a grayish area) but removing DRM on library books is not considered proper behavior. There is plenty of help for the former but none for the latter, not even from the creators/maintainers of the DEM removal tools. It would help a lot if you specified which store you are having issues with and (if you don't mind) what region you are in. There's people here from all over and most are quite willing to help. We're all readers here. ![]() Last edited by fjtorres; 01-16-2016 at 07:39 AM. |

If you buy from Apple you will only be able to read on an Apple device because drm removal doesn't work on those ebooks. If you buy epub books from anywhere that requires ADE, only install ADE 2.x. Any higher version is capable of using hardened drm even if it's not currently used. If you buy from Amazon make sure it is able to be read on your device of choice. Some Amazon ebooks can't be downloaded to K4PC, but Amazon will always show what devices it can be downloaded to if an ebook has that restriction.

I`m not as Scotish as I might sound here so please don`t misunderstand me but as an Ebook starter it is natural to ask; "Why buy from any of the big sellers when it appears I can download at no cost thousands of ebooks ?"
Maybe it is because the sellers have a bigger selection, however I just obtained "The Martian" from my local library (NSW in Aus) while it was $5 (I think) from the chargers. |

Oh I see your question now.
DRM is what some sellers and libraries put on their books to prevent stealing. It only affects where a reader can read a book. ALL library ebooks have it. Now if you want to "own" the book, you should buy it. If you just want to read it, borrow it from a library b for a limited time. |

If you like classics, many public domain books are available free on gutenberg.org
http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/a Or scroll up near the top of this forum page and click where it says E-books to get public domain books which have been uploaded by mobileread members. You may also want to try the free/bargain forum on mobileread where members post information about books they've found free/on sale. I keep a wishlist at Google Play books and check it regularly - occasionally I'll find one of the books on my list is on sale. Last edited by 4691mls; 01-16-2016 at 10:36 PM. Reason: correction - Google Play books, not Google Books |
