To reset or not to reset? That is the question.
Every now and then, I've had to do a factory reset. No biggie and it's solved whatever I meant it to solve. But occasionally I see people advocate a factory reset as a tune-up, or akin to getting an oil change - just something that should be scheduled occasionally to keep things humming along.
So is this something I should be doing? I admit it, I hesitate. Partially because I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school, but also because of the nuisance aspect of starting from scratch. Should I suck it up and do it or let well enough alone? |

I only factory reset if there is a major problem.
It took 4 plus hours to get my Fire back to where it was after a factory reset. Anyone care to delete 7000 books off the carousel that only loaded 1000 at a time. |

Which device(s) do you factory reset?
I've never had the need to factory reset my 650, T1, or H2O. |

I'm not sure. I think I had to reset my 950 once and my Glo once. Maybe one other device? My question is that I've seen some here advocate resetting as something that should be done without specific cause, just to keep the device running smoothly. If it'll improve performance or longevity, of course I'd be willing to do it. But there is a nuisance aspect to it, so are the advantages obvious or quantifiable, or just a feeling?

My primary reader is 5 years old. I've only done one full reset -- it was slowing down on opening ebooks and turning pages and nothing else worked.

I used to have to reset every Kobo after pretty much every update, but seems to have settled down now and I haven't bothered for a while.

I don't understand people advocating a factory reset "as a default". If you have no problem, why do you have to suffer the nuisance of it? I think I had to do once a factory reset to my Kobo (and I could have avoided it looking at posts a bit more). After that, nothing. And I won't do another factory reset unless it's necessary.

I'd agree just go for the restart/reboot of your device if you want to do anything. The factory reset should only really be something you need to do for fixing problems.
One of our Kindle Keyboards was reset to factory defaults to fix a problem, the other has been fine, and along with my Paperwhite has only been rebooted following a firmware update. My Sony 350 has required quite a few reboots following freezes, but like the aforementioned Kindle Keyboard, since getting a reset to factory settings it's been running absolutely fine. |

I just did a factory reset on my year old Kobo Glo HD, before I installed 3.19.whateverthereleasenumberwas.
The reason I did a factory reset was to trim down the internal database. It had gotten to be over 3,000 rows of book content info. Since I keep track of book reading in a real database, I really don't need to retain history on the device. And since I generally only keep minimal ebooks on the device, going through the reload process is not onerous. I also backup the non-ebook sections of the device, so I have the cluttered databases (and their associated history) if I need them. |
