i86 battery life?
I was wondering what people are getting in terms of battery life from the i86. I just bought an i86 Plus a few weeks ago, and the battery does not seem to be lasting as long as other e-ink readers I've had in the past. I am using it fairly heavily, though. I'm having to charge every 2-3 days, and I would estimate probably ~5-6 hours a use a day with the frontlight on about half the time. Device is in sleep mode when not in use with WiFi and Bluetooth disabled. I'm just trying to figure out if this is typical compared to what others are getting.

My i86 is rooted using ondemand governor, so it spends most of its time at the minimum frequency. I rarely turn WiFi on. Unfortunately my battery life is not very good -- somewhere around a week of battery life with about an hour of use per day. I'm hoping Onyx will improve the battery life, but it doesn't look like they will.

Android devices such as the i86 always have a much shorter battery life than a dedicated Linux reading device such as the Kindle, Kobo, etc, because Android is doing a lot more in the background. I think you'll find that most of the power drain is occurring when it's in sleep mode; this doesn't happen with conventional readers.
Android gives you a lot more flexibility, but there is a price to pay for that in terms of power consumption. |

It seems that installing the eink optimized "Jotas" build of CoolReader (also known as jCoolReader) dramatically improves battery life (provided you leave WiFi off). I only have three days of use now, at around 2-3 hours per day, but the battery is around 85%. I think that PROVIDED you stay within the eink optimized application, battery life should be significantly improved.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=268388 There is a feature in Pearl and Carta eink screens called Regal Waveform, which allows partial refreshes of the eink screen. However, it must be implemented at the software level. That means apps and the operating system needs to be coded with Real Waveform support. It seems that the Onyx team hasn't implemented Regal Waveform. |

Less usage on my side, but a lot of page turns (I mostly read manga) and always with the front light on.
WiFi is the real killer here: in airplane mode I can easily get a full week without turning it off at all, just sleeping. |
