CannConnecting Kindle Paperwhite to Calibre under Windows 10
Hi,
I recently used the upgrade to Windows 10 and downloaded it. I previously had Windows 7. I use Calibre 2.47.0 as my ebook manager and now find that when I use the usb cable to connect my kindle to my pc and Calibre so that I can add books to my kindle the device does not show up in Calibre yet shows as drive F on my computer. When I connect the usb cable from kindle to pc I get the noise which indicates a connection and it shows in the Safely Remove Hardware area as Eject Amazon Kindle. When I try to open drive F it gives me this error message.....F:\ The directory name is invalid. F:\ is not accessible. A device attached to the system is not functioning. I have swapped usb cords to see if that would make a difference, no joy. Can anyone help me solve my problem or know of another ebook manager that works with Windows 10 without problems. I have reinstalled Windows 10 I read through the thread https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...=264201&page=2 trying the things mentioned. I found under device manager a yellow triangle under portable devices, I did the update driver which came back as the latest driver, did the scan for hardware changes nothing found and then I uninstalled the driver hoping windows 10 would search for a new driver when i reconnect my Kindle, nothing, I found a windows 10 driver for Kindle, downloaded and installed that, nothing. The Device Manager now shows the F:\ under Portable Devices without the yellow triangle however I still cannot get it to connect to Calibre. I have done the normal install and reboots after each function to no avail. I found a couple of the USB controllers updated drivers the Intel (R) 6 series/200...... Can anyone help please. |

I don't know what the problem is, but Windows 10 and Calibre both work with Kindles. I;ve had three different model Kindles plugged into my laptop running Windows 10 (updated from Windows 8.1)

I also had the same problem with my kindle fire 7 not connecting to Calibre. A workaround is to simply use calibre to email books to your kindle or use calibre companion.

I agree that emailing is an easier option although it does end up on the cloud and the device, is there any way to direct the email to one or the other or deleting the second entry somehow.

But you then end up having to convert everything to dual-Mobi/KF8 or you end up with Mobi. So the email solution is not really a solution.
One thing to try is go to the website of whoever made the computer or motherboard and get updated Windows 10 drivers for the USB ports. |

Work Around to Connecting-Kindle-Paperwhite-to-Calibre under windows 10
I still think Calibre is a great program its just that I cannot get it to work with W10 and my kindle. I suspect there is a setting somewhere which I may inadvertently have changed which has caused the problem.
At this stage I now use the following work around and must admit find it quite a lot friendlier to use. I have downloaded Send to Kindle http://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle/pc. All I have to do is right click on mobi ebooks that is saved to my hard drive and select Send to Kindle, this then sends the book to my kindle email address or any kindle email address that you have loaded into the Send to Kindle program. The ebook automatically loads onto my kindle for which you must have your kindle connect to wifi and have a kindle email address which you can set up in Amazon. It does require the ebooks to be in mobi format. I have also downloaded an epub converter to convert epub to mobi if required. I have found this solution best suits my need in the meantime. Hope this may help others who may have the same problem and thanks for those that helped me earlier on, it is appreciated. |

It looks like calibre is failing to connect to the internet. One possible reason is because an antivirus is being overly protective.
Try excluding calibre from your antivirus. ... Sorry to hear you are having problems with calibre + Win10 + Kindle. ![]() A number of people have reported the same problem -- the curse of the Windows 10 upgrade. For some reason, Windows is not telling applications that your ereader is a removable drive, so calibre cannot find it to connect to it. Only in-place upgrades sem to be affected, reinstalling Windows from scratch *should* fix it. Or you can use Connect-to-folder instead -- it needs to be done manually, but you can connect to any folder and have calibre treat it like a generic device, send books to it, etc. |

@David57: I wonder if you could try something for me...
Open a windows command prompt and type diskpart There will probably be a prompt from Windows to allow a program to make changes to your computer. Select the OK button Then type automount This will display the setting for automatically mounting drives on your computer. Cut and paste the output in a reply here, or if needs be take a screen print if that's easier. Finally type exit to leave diskpart. Thanks ![]() Peter |

It now says Automatic mounting of new volumes enabled. That's all. David |
