Mmm. But how many jobs will be uncreated outside Amazon?
I ask because we in Western Australia recently had the (previously somewhat restricted; only small stores could open all hours) general shopping hours extended, with our Premier proudly boasting of so many new jobs in the giant supermarkets. However, the first thing that happened is that numerous small family convenience stores closed, losing numerous jobs. How many no-one knows, because this was not something that crossed the Premier's mind. (The same thing happened years ago in Canberra where I then lived, when the new Capital Territory local government did the same thing. There were two convenience stores on the way home from work where I could park in front, nip in, pick up some food and a couple of beers, and continue on home; they both closed almost immediately, and from then on it was the local shopping mall without the option. And I hate shopping malls.) The actual nett job increases were, I suspect, a lot less that touted. And the job quality went down, as family owned small businesses were replaced by minimum wage casual workers. Not knocking Amazon, you understand; just sceptical (or skeptical) of the numbers. |

Well, considering Pearson (among others) is cutting 4000 jobs, Amazon will have plenty of experienced personnel to choose from.
Expanding during times when others are shrinking is good strategy...if you can afford it. |
