Scribd Pulls Digital Comics From Its Subscription Reading Service

Quote:
A reader has tipped me to the news that Scribd has quietly removed digital comics from its subscription reading service. Ten thousand comics had been added in February 2015 when Scribd was still in the upward swing, but now that Scribd is in decline the comic books have vanished in a cost-cutting measure.

Scribd had not officially announced the change, but numerous people have complained about their departure on Twitter, and digital comics are no longer mentioned on the Scribd website.
Quote:
Scribd had launched an unlimited reading service in late 2013 only to drastically scale it back. They first culled romance titles (including Harlequin) in mid 2015, then dialed down its audiobooks offering several months later, and finally abandoned the unlimited access offer in early 2016 in favor of a credit system.

And now Scribd has dropped comics as well.

At this point you gotta wonder if they'll have anything left to read in three months.

I may be misunderstanding this, so please set me straight if needed:

It looks like you have to enroll for a subscription with your credit card, but you get the first 3 months free? You must give them - UPFRONT - your credit card number and then it automatically renews after 3 months?

Yep, you got it. Quite a few of these free subscription offers require a credit card.

Just be sure to cancel it before the end of the third month or your credit card will be billed.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll have to think about this one.

I was able to join up. I find it difficult to determine which audio books require a credit, though. I suppose I'll just have to click "listen now" and see what happens, once I make a decision.

Amazon is showing the Scribd app as incompatible with my cheapie Fire tablet, so I guess I'm out of luck.

Amazon does that with many apps that compete with its services. The app has to be sideloaded and can be obtained directly from Scribd (unless you've added to Google Play store to your Fire, then you should be able to get it there).

Thank You for this.

Unless it is Amazon I mostly just hop from service to service as the freebies come up. I have managed to get Amazon to let me keep my educational half off Prime discount well behind the 4 year cutoff, being in education has it perks.. I chain the Kindle Unlimited yearly subscription discounts so I have never paid full price for that. When Amazon's music service started up I jumped on their offer of letting me subscribe for what I was paying Spotify with a 30 percent discount if I payed for two years. Since I was in Spotify's half off educational discount plan I managed to get Amazon music for about 10 dollars less for two years then they now charge for one year. Thanks to the users here I got 102 audiobooks for just over $175 last year. Being frugal is a sport for me.

Apparently the audio book I selected and am listening to, used my credit for the month. There was no notification or warning given (contrary to the FAQ).
