How to install downloaded firmware

I feel an idiot asking this question, but I have searched and haven't managed to find the answer anywhere here. Must have missed something really obvious

My Kobo Touch "upgraded" to v. 3.19.... which is a disaster, so I've done a factory reset, and downloaded v. 3.18 to my PC from the "direct links to kobo firmware downloads" thread.

Now what exactly should I do with the file kobo-update-3.18.0.zip ?

Well, I uninstalled Kobo Desktop, then copied the firmware to the .kobo directory and disconnected the ereader. It did some things and then restarted to a screen which lets me choose a language, then it says "set up your ereader...".

I connect it to the pc and it wants me to download Kobo desktop. Can I avoid kobo desktop installing the unstable 3.19... version?

I tried using the wifi to avoid kobo desktop, but that says it's installing updates, so I aborted it. This is not my day!

Let the Kobo desktop finish updating your library and so forth. Before you eject your ereader, go into the .kobo directory and delete the firmware upgrade files. These should be KoboRoot.tgz, manifest.md5sum and a directory named upgrade. If you are planning on installing a different firwmware version from the automatic one, copy the files from that firmware's zip archive into the .kobo directory. You can now eject your ereader.

Note that you will need to do this each time you use the Kobo desktop.

DNSB's instructions are the way to go, but I'm curious. Personally, I think that 3.19.x is better 3.18.0. So, in what way was 3.19.x a disaster?

That worked fine, thank you very much, DNSB, it's more or less OK now.
best wishes, David

Davidfor, 3.19.xxxx was very unstable on my original-model Touch. Library listing sometimes superimposed over the home page, and other screen-drawing problems. And crashes, particularly when adjusting font settings for a book. I had to reset it using a paperclip a lot.

Now that I'm back to 3.18.0 it's fairly stable, still freezes sometimes, but no messed-up screens. Hoping for an improved version of 3.19 in due course.

It's really annoying the way that Kobo Desktop installs updates without the option to skip them. And I'm not interested in synching or sharing my reading experiences, so I can do without the Desktop, using Calibre or Adobe to put books onto the Touch.

Someone else has reported something similar with their Touch. But, I have two N905 Touch's and both are running the 3.19.x firmware with no problems.

Well, I was away from home for a few days, using the Kobo with 3.18.0, and it was very slow to load books, very slow to turn pages, and _very_ liable to freeze if screen touched while it was (perhaps) working. I wish there was some visual sign that it's working on something.

I was resetting by paperclip every 5-10 minutes. Not happy. I'd buy a small android tablet except that the battery life on the e-reader is so good.
