Sideloaded Books sorted by Author Inconsistently

I have a number of sideloaded books on my Kindle, which has been set to sort on Author.

They have been seemingly randomly sorted someimes by Surname and sometimes by First Name. The most absurd example is two books by Dornford Yates. One has been sorted on Dornford and the other on Yates.

My intention is to sort on Surname followed by First Name.

The books are maintained in a Calibre library, and there is nothing obvious there to explain this behaviour.

Can anyone offer an explanation? Thanks.

Make sure you have the option set in the MOBI/AZW3 output preferences to use author_sort instead of author.
Then make sure all your books HAVE a correct author_sort.

Kindle ebooks only have the one field (called "author", but it expects to see an author_sort and it automatically swaps around the comma for display purposes).

And make sure that the metadata is entered as last name comma first name. Sometimes publishers do it wrongly as first name last name.

Thanks to both.

It was the MOBI/AZW3 Output preference which had not been set to use author sort for author.

After setting that, I reloaded the books, and all is fine.

That leaves me with the question of how it came to be unset in the first place. I have been using my Kinde in conjunction with Calibre for some years now.

That will remain one of life's little mysteries.
