Damaged screen

So I just posted yesterday that I've upgraded my Aura's firmware and was enjoying it. Very unfortunately, I just discovered that my screen is broken on the inside and only the lower quarter is responding and the remaining 3/4 of the screen is dead. Does Kobo do repairs or is my device simply now a paperweight? Gutted because I really love it.

Okay. So looking around the threads, I do now have an expensive paperweight. After immersing myself in the 5 stages of grief, I decided to purchase the Glo HD. Hope I'm making the right decision here.

You have my sympathy. Any idea as to what may have caused the breakage?

Is it precisely 1/4 with a straight horizontal line dividing the working from non-working part? In which case it might be an electronics failure instead - if still under guarantee this should be covered.

But if it's only approx. 1/4 and the dividing line is curved like a piece of broken glass, yes it's the screen.

It was just inside my bag with my wallet and phone but I was out all day and didn't notice it until about an hour after I got home. Either it got hit inside my bag while I was outside or my puppy stepped on my bag and hit it. My mistake in assuming the couch was safe to place my bag when I have a pup that jumps around.

It looks like a glass shard has been taken off when it is turned off. The line below is straight but the line on top has a curve. If you look closely at the image I uploaded here, the lightest area is the one I'm talking about.

Was it in a case?

Definitely a fractured glass substrate. Any curved or diagonal lines indicate that.

Sadly, it wasn't in a case (my case is just a zippered pouch actually). Sent an email to Kobo already but I found out having it repaired would be way more expensive than getting a new one so I just decided to upgrade and get the Glo HD instead of another Aura (Aura H2O is way off my budget).

I suggest ordering a rigid book-style case at the same time.

Looking at some of them actually. Any recommendations?

I like the Gecko Slimfit, but your mileage may vary, and if you're tossing it in a bag a lot you might like to add a padded pouch or buy a thicker, padded heavy duty protection style case.

I tend to carry it around anywhere I go and I'm quite amazed at how my Aura survived tumbles and bumps without really any kind of protection after almost 2 years. I think I'll have to go with the book-style cases this time. I also like the Gecko one but unfortunately, I can't find it in the US. Having it shipped would be costly, as I am already shipping out the Glo HD from the US to the Philippines (they don't really carry eReaders here and the ones Kobo sells here are the old Glo, old Touch, and H2o). I'm leaning towards the Omoton one, which I think is similar to the Gecko.

We've not had a broken Kobo here yet either, including one that traveled to and fro from primary school a lot with my not-particularly-careful son (always in a case). I do make an effort to put my H2O up against something flat/hard in my bag if possible, so it doesn't have asymmetrical twisting/bending forces on it. For extra care, bags made for tablets with a reinforced section are often ideal, or if you have a paper book in the bag it can go up against that.

I also do that. I normally place it at the back most part of my bag so that it would be supported by my body as I often use crossover bags and purses and so that even if I bump my bag into something else, it won't be the first to get hit.

Worst bump next to this one that killed it was when I dropped it onto a pebbled path while I was standing up. Corners were chipped off but the screen was fine. Probably helped that I'm a bit on the short side.
