Looking for an ereader that shows reading progress by screen, like the Sony 350
The Kindle PW2 doesn't do this, and I don't remember if my old Sony 505 did or not. Page numbers can be shown on the Kindle, but those are paper equivalent numbers. Meaning multiple screen swipes are needed to advance the numbers shown.
The Sony 350 shows screen swipe numbers - one number advance for each swipe. Somehow, I find this to be extremely satisfying. Do other ereaders have a similar setting or is this only a feature of Sony readers? |

Thank you! No kobos on display anywhere near me so this is exactly what I wanted to learn.

One caveat--Kobo kePubs in the default Kobo reader only show page numbers by "screen turns" for a chapter at a time--not for the whole book. For example if chapter 5 consists of 25 "screen turns" and your reader is set to show progress for the current chapter by page number it will show "Page xx of 25". But if you set it to show progress for the entire book by page turn it reverts back to the Adobe ePub page numbering system--where it can stay on the same page # for a few different screens.

On the new Paperwhites and Voyages you can set it to show the reading time left in the chapter. The device monitors your reading speed to keep this as accurate as it can. I've never done any serious tests of it's accuracy and I'd be surprised if it was anymore than a ballpark guess but for me it usually seems about right.
By the way, the Kindle can also use locations. It can show you at the bottom of the screen how many locations you've read in the book. Each page is likely to have more than one location, depending on the font size, so you can gauge your progress through the book. As I understand it a location is 128 characters, which includes non-printable characters. My current book, a fairly long one, has 10,482 locations and I'm currently at location 5131. This doesn't give you more information than page numbers but it is finer grained and, I think, a little more intuitive. Kobos, using epubs I make from my Kindle books with Calibre, doesn't give me much useful progress information. It's one of the few things I dislike about my Kobos. However, if at the start of each chapter I navigate to the next chapter and make a mental note of it's page number and then go back, remembering that number, I can sort of gauge my own progress through the chapter. It's not as satisfying as what the Kindle does but it's okay. On my Nook Glowlight Plus I can always see my current page number and always see the page number of the next chapter in the table of contents so that gives me something to go by. Again, not particularly satisfying but it's better than nothing. It gives me no progress information other than the bar graph at the bottom of the page. The best solution is Moon+ Reader on my phone and tablet. It gives me two numbers in parentheses following the chapter number at the bottom of every page of text. The second number is, I think, the number of pages in the chapter. The first number is the number of pages I've read in the chapter so far. That gives me an idea of the length of the chapter and my progress in it. Barry |

The Sony 350 also recalculates the swipe counts after you change the font size. |

I feel for you because LRF/LRX were an awful mess and the LRX DRM was never broken so you will have to lose them when you move to a different Reader. LRF can be converted to ePub, but will need editing afterwards. So convert in Calibre and edit with Calibre's eBook editor.
After the X50 line from Sony, even Sony dumped LRF/LRX. Do yourself a favor and forget them. Move to ePub. Newer Readers have a much better version of RMDSK (ADE) and a much better screen with a very nice front light for reading in the dark or in dim light. Don't keep what will eventually bite you in the ass as no other brand Reader supports this. The t1, T2, & T3 all dumped LRF/LRX. so do yourself a huge favor and go ePub as you will be able to keep what you have without the need to convertwhen you do eventually switch for a Kobo. As for page numbers, it is very easy to get used to ADE page numbers. So I suggest a Kobo Aura H2O or Kobo Glo HD depending on what size you want. Last edited by JSWolf; 11-23-2015 at 08:54 PM. |

The books I'm reading were originally in AZW3 and I convert them to EPUB and LRF in calibre. I save the original source files, of course, but keep all three formats. I've seen very few problems with any of the formats after conversion. I'm pleased with the Paperwhite otherwise but love reading on the 350 quite a bit more just because of the page numbering. Looks like my next purchase will be Kobo. Last edited by ambient.quiet; 11-23-2015 at 09:04 PM. Reason: Wide Open Spaces |
