One Proud Legacy, Two Powerful Companies by McGraw-Hill is an autohagiographical retrospective corporate history of its McGraw-Hill Professional and McGraw-Hill Educational branches, assembled to celebrate the company's 125th anniversary back in 2012, free courtesy of publisher McGraw-Hill.
Despite the unstinting self-praise, this actually looks pretty interesting, with lots of period photos and stuff about vintage ad campaigns and other things which may be of interest to Gentle Readers wishing to know more about how things used to work in the publishing industry. And apparently also finance and construction, since this has some kind of aviation section in it. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK) and iTunes via two different URLs #1 & #2 which seem to have no difference in the contents (neither available to Canadians). This is a ~220 meg file, which you may prefer not to download via whatever device you might have that's on a plan with data limits or has little remaining free space. And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Probably the other McGraw-Hill books out today will be of more actual help to Gentle Readers with their careers and lives and such, but I kind of like this one, even if it is somewhat unabashedly self-congratulatory as these things often are, and it does provide an interesting if selective view into one corporation's contributions to an industry over more than a century, which makes it nicely entertaining. ![]() ![]() Enjoy! Description In celebrating its 125th anniversary, McGraw-Hill examines its past and looks ahead to a bright future. One Proud Legacy: Two Powerful Companies traces McGraw-Hill’s roots in the emerging railroad industry and explores the remarkable opportunities to come as it separates into two independent companies, one focused on education, the other on the global capital and commodity markets. Following the sale of McGraw-Hill Education (expected early 2013), the company’s shareholders are anticipated to rename the company McGraw Hill Financial. The new company will include some of the most well-known names in finance and business, including Standard & Poor’s, S&P Capital IQ, S&P Dow Jones Indices, Platts and J.D. Power and Associates. McGraw Hill Financial and McGraw-Hill Education will continue the mission set out by founder James H. McGraw in 1888: give people the insight and essential intelligence they need to make decisions vital for their future. |
