New Comixology app update allows merging of Amazon account

The update appeared for iOS this morning, and it offers the ability to merge accounts (permanently), which adds some of the comic books purchased from Amazon to be read with the Comixology app as well as the Kindle app. The Comixology app has more features to control the presentation, and automatically organizes into series, so this is a welcome and long-awaited development.

The update is also available in Amazon Appstore and Google Play. For the two other people who have installed it, I must report that the Comics Fire Phone app has not been updated. I think it requires a 'special' version because the app wants to use swipe from bottom to reveal controls, and on Fire Phone that is a system gesture.

This only seems to apply to books that supported 'guided view' in the kindle app, not those which were in mobi format.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to add samples that are added to your Kindle Library. I'll be sending them some feedback about that. They would also benefit (on iOS) by adding the ability to browse the Comixology store and download samples from there, just as you can with the Kindle app (weirdly that in-app storefront does not include a category for Comics).

I'm also not sure this is a two-way street: do things you got from Comixology go into your Kindle library? And thus (potentially) let you read on Kindles as well as mobile devices? And sync between devices? That's how it works with Audible at least.

I don't know this works with Kindle Unlimited borrows yet, probably not. Maybe they can only add things that exist in Comixology store. But that would be another enhancement they could make (KU support).

No, it's not a two-way street, as I posted in the Comics deals thread, here:

FYI, there are 11 Kindle + comiXology Account Merge FAQ articles. I've pasted below the contents of the first one.

Why should I merge my Amazon and comiXology accounts?

Signing in with your Amazon account improves the experience for Kindle and comiXology customers by making Kindle-purchased comics, graphic novel and manga readable on comiXology with our cinematic Guided View experience. Many future features will depend on using your Amazon account, as well.

This is the first step toward using only Amazon accounts to sign in, which will allow us to use even more Amazon muscle to the benefit of comiXology customers. At some point in the future, the only way to sign in to comiXology will be with your Amazon account.

Please note that after merging, only Kindle-purchased comics will move to comiXology, your comiXology purchases will not be available in your Kindle library.

Does it restore in-app purchases? I really miss those.

No, it doesn't.

What is still missing for me is a unified shopping experience, as one has more or less between Amazon and Audible. So I presume Comixology has content that is not available in Kindle Store, and cannot be read with Kindles and Kindle apps. Conversely, it is not possible to know if something you buy from Kindle Store can be read with the Comics app. It makes it harder to make an informed purchase decision.

Still this is a step closer.
