How to categorize books in companion

I have all my books listed in Calibre on my PC. I just want to use companion to keep a few books by category. I finally figured out how to get a book from Calibre on to the companion, but I thought the directions on the app were vague.

Now that the book is there how do I assign a category to it? I will have books on "home improvement", sci fi etc.

CC uses whatever tags you have assigned a book in Calibre so as long as your books are tagged in Calibre those will automatically come across when you transfer a book.

Okay, so if I did not use a tag in calibre I will have to assign one and then resend to CC?

After adding tags in Calibre, connect as a wireless device in CC and metadata will sync automatically for any books already on your device.

I have a similar question... sort of...

I have a galaxy tab that I've loaded multiple formats of the same books via Calbre Companion and now realize this is a waste of space and I want to remove all the books that are in that extra format.

Question is... If I remove a single format from one of my Calibre libraries, will those books in only that format be removed from the galaxy tablet when I sync with the PC?

Syncing CC will never remove a book from CC or calibre.

If I understand you correctly, you have multiple copies of several books on CC in different formats, and you want to remove all but one format from CC. There are three ways to do this.
  1. Connect your tab as a wireless device. In calibre, sort by "On Device" so you see all the books with multiple formats together. Pick one of the books in the library view and press the "Delete" button. Tap the "Device" button, uncheck the format you want to keep on CC, then press OK.
  2. If you don't have a lot of books then it might be easier/faster to delete them all then send the formats you want. You can delete all the books by connecting CC as a wireless device, going to the device view, selecting all, and pressing delete. Alternatively you can delete all the book files on your device with a file manager, then use CC's "Books with missing files" function to clean up CC's database.
  3. If you aren't in a hurry you can delete the extra formats in CC by going to book details and tapping delete.

Thanks... Your instructions made it easy to figure out... When I checked the subsequent delete list that pops up after selecting the books with the unwanted format, it turns out that many of the epubs were not actually installed on the tablet, but rather they are listed as available. Then all I had to do was uncheck those that I wanted to keep and delete the others. After that I sorted on the PC Calibre by device and transferred the missing books. The correct format was transferred because I modified the preferred format order.

What confused me was when clicking a book in CC the Book Details page opens and at the bottom is "format" and "formats". Once I realized that Format is the book format that is on the device, and Formats are the various formats that are on the PC, I changed the order of preferred formats putting those most preferred at the top so the undesired format will not typically transfer to CC unless it is the only one available. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks again.
