Labeling (organizing) of images
![]() The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (an Project Gutenberg EBook). It has about 280 pictures and I want organize them without that typical Gutenberg filth. Code:
_public_vhost_g_gutenberg_html_files_74_74-h_images_35-273.jpg _public_vhost_g_gutenberg_html_files_74_74-h_images_35-274.jpg Calibre don't accept (via Bulk rename selected files)(with prefix image_chapter01_) the starting number 001 (neither 01). Strangely, it takes over the images of the second chapter (prefix image_chapter02_) with starting numbers 06, 07 etc. Edit: Striked out, existing scheme (calibre pad it with the minimum necessary padding) was known, but simply overlooked by me. image_chapter01_5 ... image_chapter02_06 It should look like Code:
image_chapter01_001.jpeg image_chapter01_002.jpeg ... image_chapter35_273.jpeg image_chapter35_274.jpeg Last edited by chaot; 11-11-2015 at 06:52 AM. Reason: add Edit ... & modified image |

No can do (as of today).
calibre automatically pads the number according to the renamed files. If the renamed files start at 6 and go to 10, then they all get padded to two digits. If they are all 1-digit numbers (1 to 5) they won't get padded. I would name them chapter02-image-1 etc. |

While it might be desired to include the chapter number and a 'from 1' sequence number, like theducks says, it's just for people. Is there a reason to use that specific naming convention?
I never tried bulk renumbering images, but it does work: the image files are renamed and links are updated. |

Small intermediate question (detailed answer later): Where I can change the prefix to chapter? In this case, otherwise it would be possibly image etc.
Anyway, the possibility to change the prefix (as default) seems to me in some respects appropriate. Bulk rename items Prefix: Chapter- Last edited by chaot; 10-31-2015 at 07:42 AM. Reason: appropriate |

If you mean, whee can you set the prefix so that it will be remembered, there is no setting to do so.
I think the most common form would be Chapter-01, but anytime you are changing it, it will be very situation-specific. How often is the default the wrong form? |

Even roman numbers I, II, III, IV for old books (like my example from Mark Twain). I admit, may be this idea doesn't make really mind!? Quote:
And what about Bulk rename ... of pictures? We write Image-01 etc. Answer to your question: Very often! Although Calibre's been a damn fine software, there's still something to do!? Sometimes a thread starts (with a more or less definite opinion) and turns out in the course due to the meaning of others that own attitude was somehow wrong and needed to be revised. Doing a good job always means a solid understanding of the matter and usable tools. This maxim applies also for dealing with calibre. There is also a difference whether there are a few dozen books to edit or some thousands - in the latter case one is willing more to invest (sweat). And then we come to things like concepts. As a typical German (in this case) I do rarely something without a plan or concept. Commenting on what I mean here would be beyond the scope of this thread (will be dealt with in chaot's edit concepts (continuous thread). @theducks wrote The filename is for humans ... and @phossler similar ... it's just for people. That gave me reason for thinking. Before my claim was to put the File Browser entries in English, with lowercase letters for a professional look. BINGO, I admit that was wrong. Since my edits made so far concern only a few books the upcoming changes is not too much hassle. The entries in the File Browser of my German, English and Spanish books are now will be set language-specific and start with capital letters. File Browser Text & Images entries I am not sure to got you right! But if, overview! Last edited by chaot; 11-06-2015 at 01:25 PM. |

Well, for the sake of foreign-language users alone I'd say being able to change the default is a good thing. Excellent point.
![]() As for padding the number, I guess you could always use the prefix: Code:
image_chapter01_0 If you want extra padding (because you aren't renaming all of them at once) just add the extra padding to the prefix. |

Maybe if Kovid does change the default prefix, he could make it a tiny bit smarter and have separate default prefixes for bulk rename of \text files (e.g. 'chap') and \images files (e.g. 'img') |

Well, it appears the prefix is already localized, so it will appear in whichever language the interface is set to.
Which seems more logical to me anyway. There is such a thing as too many settings. In the morning I will submit a patch that customizes the default prefix according to file type. ![]() |

Filed: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1514468
Merged in source: https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibr...5013c8b05e0df6 https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibr...b71951db1ad983 So now default prefixes depend on the type of file, which should help. e.g. renaming a bunch of images will default to "Image-" instead of "Chapter-" It still won't remember the last custom prefix you used though. Hopefully this is enough to mitigate the problem. And as I said, they are all translated -- actually, the new ones will need to have translations added on Transifex first -- so foreign-language users shouldn't feel left out. ![]() (If you want to use the English GUI I guess it makes sense for calibre to offer the English prefixes...) |

But your scheme is better than mine (the most important word Image should be at the beginning)(don't forget hyphens)(Images or anything else, please do not call zero), so Image_Chapter-xy_xy or may be more clear Image-xy_Chapter-xy Quote:
