Need some help with Fonts on 5.6.5
Hi all, I've just recently picked up a PW2 and, without realizing it would automatically update, I'm stuck on 5.6.5.
I am severely visually impaired and bought the thing thinking that I could just modify the fonts or invert the colors (white on black is much easier to see), but now that the jailbreak has been postponed indefinitely, I'm wondering if there are any other ways to modify the fonts. I don't mind trying to modify the actual books, but I haven't had much luck. I was hoping to even be able to simply make all of the fonts bold in a book, but I cannot find an easy tutorial on this anywhere. If anyone has any step by step tutorials that might actually work, I'd appreciate the help. I'd really rather be able to upload the files to the send-to-kindle site so that the files would sync between my ipad and kindle. (I bought the PW2 so that I could read outside--can't see the ipad screen outside). I say that to say that I cannot upload azw3 files (the only way to use Publisher's fonts that I've found). Any help would be appreciated. My PW2 is safely in Airplane mode, in case the jailbreak does come out, but if I could solve this font issue some other way I don't mind missing out on other features of being able to jailbreak. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Enor. |

You need to embed fonts in each book using Calibre.
https://www.google.ca/search?q=kindl...KoipmwHUgYnADQ I'm not sure about inserting bold fonts, but I'm sure it's possible. The non-Amazon version of Caecilia has a heavy font which is bolder than bold. Hopefully someone will be along who can help you more. |

You could return the Kindle and get a Kobo. The Kobo will allow you to do all these things (custom fonts and bold) directly from the normal menu system. There are a couple of things I don't like about the Kobo, but for font customization, it is unbeatable.

In the 5.6.x series firmware - -
The USB storage area has the directories: Kindle:/system/fonts which ships empty. I don't know how to use it, nor do I know if this means a return of the end-user: USE_ALT_FONTS feature. I never did use it myself, back when some versions of the firmware supported it. If someone who has past experience with the alternate fonts feature could dig into this a bit and post here .... #8400 |

I just noticed this post is in the Developer Section. I suggest you put it in the main Kindle area (or a mod move it there). You will get more responses in the main area. This is not a developer subject and less people will see it here and respond.

And in the past it was handled here. Searching this forum, regardless of where the thread moves to should find the old information. |

If it's just the matter of adding one bolder/bigger/whatever font (you can't have the inversion part aka Night Mode, white text on black background, without jailbreak and then using KOReader app) you can embed your custom font using Calibre, and to be able to send the book to Kindle Cloud archive you just change mobi output type from "old" to "both", send that file "dual" mobi file as you would plain old mobi. Your PW should then get azw3 file delivered that contains the embedded font, that is you have "Publisher font" option available.

Is there a way to ensure that I am downloading the azw3 file from the server and not the mobi file? Because I don't see "publisher font" so I'm thinking that it's not grabbing the azw3 file. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong, though. If this is in the wrong forum, I apologize. I was sent here through another site that linked to the developer section. I can't just return it, either. I got a great deal on ebay for it and have no way of returning it to get a Kobo (or any other device). |

As I wrote a few posts above -
The firmware series 5.6.x has changed font handling and a changed reader. It may or may not support the same feature set that it did in the past. = = = = Keep in mind - That if just larger fonts will serve - The font scale setting in USB storage feature does still work on 5.6.x firmware. There are recent posts here (about the 'non-jailbreak font hack'). Last edited by knc1; 11-02-2015 at 08:27 AM. |

I did a search for non-jailbreak font hack and it didn't turn anything up. Is there a thread that I can take a look at to see if that might be helpful? Thanks so much! |

![]() Plug Kindle's USB cable into PC - At the top of the USB storage area displayed, right next to the 'documents' folder, create a file by the name of: FONT_RAMP All caps, no extension. Thank you. I did find my way through it a bit. Not quite what I was hoping, though.
Unfortunately, it seems that this font hack doesn't work with the mobi format that is downloaded from the send-to-kindle site. It only seems to work with azw3 files. I feel like I'm missing something important, as the file that I uploaded to Amazon was a "both" file, but it is only downloading to my pw2 as a mobi, not an azw3 file. Is there a setting that I might be missing to force the kindle to download the azw3 file? |

I've tested this literally 8 days ago on 2 different books for a friend who wanted to use WiFi delivery using Kindle Cloud but have both custom font and soft hyphens added. So I've hyphenated the epub first, thet done epub> "dual" mobi conversion where I've chosen font family to embed . Then I've sent it via email (didn't have Send to Kindle app installed) to the email address of the Kinde I wanted it to get delivered to. My PW3 got aw3 file with "Publisher font", only problem was that when turning on Publisher font there where empty squares in places where soft hyphens were added to words (subsetted font files probably miss that character). So the conclusion for the next book I should probably deselect "subset all embedded fonts". Calibre probably did subseting based on "old mobi" portion of the file that didn't have soft hyphens. I did't test this because I was lazy. But since everything was displaying as it should (visible hyphens on the end of a row where needed) when Publisher font was turned off, I guess that must be it, font subset problem... Maybe there are some problems in CSS code of your book that caused Amazon conversion service to drop all the embedded fonts. That certainly did/does happen for some people who were publishing books. Try another book, in epub format and check CSS code to make sure that there's no font-family declaration "junk code" (Times New Roman etc) outside of body tag code. Test the same epub by converting it using KindleGen (which by default also outputs "dual mobi" instead of Calibre just to check if you will still get "old mobi". Why not just load the file over the USB cable?
= = = = A quick guess here: As the 5.6.x series of firmware expects that an *.azw3 file will have a shit-load of "sidecar" related files - - Since it can only download by asin - - If the book you are loading by send-to-kindle does not have an Amazon asin (so that 5.6.x can find the related files) - - Then it must have to change it to *.mobi (or anything else that does not bundle the 'sidecar' files). - - - - Note: *.azw3 file format has been supported since the series 3.x firmware - - And the new 5.6.x series **can** display those older (without 'sidecar' files) books. It is apparently the send-to-kindle path that places the stricter requirements on the fileset. Last edited by knc1; 11-02-2015 at 09:53 AM. |
