Covers for news items gone...

I did a factory reset on my Nexus 7, which means all apps get reloaded. Many if not most of them need their settings redone.
Now, I've 'lost' the covers for my news items, and I can't find a setting for this in Calibre or Calibre Companion. What happens is this:
Calibre downloads a news source (NY Times, for example...) Cover shows up correctly if I open it in Calibre. Next, I sync it wirelessly to Calibre Companion. Covers (thumbnails) show up just fine in the book list when I start CC, and when I touch the item to begin opening it. I touch 'read' in CC which has been set to use FB Reader as it's default reader for epub. Instead of opening the cover, it opens a blank page. If I touch this page I get the normal FB Reader controls and can proceed normally.
It's not a huge deal to have lost the covers, I am just wondering why or how?

If I understand you correctly, the only place you don't see the cover is when the book is opened in FBReader. If I am correct then the problem is in the book file itself or in FBReader.

When calibre sends a book to CC, calibre updates the metadata and the cover inside the book then hands the book to CC. CC stores the book unchanged on the device. Because of the metadata rewrite the cover in the book stored by CC can be different from the cover in the book stored by calibre.

As I said above, we don't know whether there is a problem with the book or a problem with FBReader. Do you have another epub reader app that you can try? Does FBReader have a setting for a cache directory where it stores cover images?

I don't have another epub reader but could try one you suggest? FBReader has a setting to control many items but nothing relevant to this. Thanks for your fast reply- I'm off to find FB Reader support.

Since it really only to test, try one of the free ones such as moon+ free, cool reader, mantano lite.

Another thing you can do if you wish -- send me a copy of the book from the device. I can check the book structure to see if there is something strange. A relatively easy way to email me the book is to connect CC as a wireless device, then in calibre go to the device view and upload the book (available via right-click) to somewhere like the desktop. Email the book to me at cc_debug_logs at charles dot haleys dot org.

It has to be a setting lost in FB Reader. CC shows the covers quite correctly, and has been for months and months. Unfortunately, there does not appear to be any support function for FB Reader... sigh... (and as mentioned this is a slight annoyance, as all I have to do is touch the screen and then select the ToC for each book.

Was thinking about that, and it occurs to me that nothing changed on my laptop or in Calibre, so the downloaded file should be the same. All I did was reset the device. Android backup then reloads it, and supposedly with no changes in settings (true, as far as I can tell, until this!) I can't see any setting in CC that would affect this, and same for FBReader... In any case, the covers show fine in CC so I still think this is an FBReader glitch...
