One thing I really, really hate is when authors or publishers call something a "box set" when there is in fact no box. If I buy a box set I expect a physical box and it's outright deception not to supply one

So please, all you nice authors out there, don't call something a "box set" if you don't actually give your customers a box, or I'll get all cross and upset, and you wouldn't want that on your conscience, would you?

I can do you one better. Bonus Material! Now that's an even better hate. Bonus Material that's nothing more than a preview for another book by the author. That's not a bonus. That's an advertisement. Don't make my eBooks larger just because the next book in a series has been released. Don't go back and add in the bonus material because it's not a bonus and it's not useful. If I've read the book, by the time I get to the bonus material, I'll already know if I want to read the next book in the series or another book by this author. The bonus material won't help if I didn't like the book I just read. And if I didn't like it enough to give up before finishing, this bonus material won't matter at all.

But as to your box set, when they call a set of eBooks a box set, they do it wrong (besides not giving you the box) as a box set is not an omnibus. It's a set of each book on its own. That's another peeve/hate. I want these eBooks to be seperate like they were originally released. If you want to bundle them fine. Just don't combine them. Call them a bundled set and forget the box and forget the omnibus.

Jon, I have to agree with both of your points, although I don't think my level of ire is as high. Who wants to read a few pages of another book, ever, and it's certainly no bonus. At least it's easy enough to split those virtually boxed books.

As for Harry, the last thing I want is a real, not virtual, box. I've got too much carp around here as it is.

It's not that I want a box; just that I object to being told that I'll get one, and then not receiving one. If you're delivering several books as one, call it an "omnibus edition", not a box set. To me, a box set is when I get a set of books and a nice display box to hold them in, such as I have for my illustrated edition of LOTR, for example.

I saw it as a targeted vent and rant, myself. Kinda like putting a "which should I buy" in the Kindle forum when only Kindles are under consideration. Go where it'll do the most good (vain though the hope may be).

I still have a few cases with Turbo Buttons (and the wires to nowhere)

Older DOS programs did not always behave with machines faster than the original (base model: 8088, 80286 ) because software developers used soft delay loops

Hmm... but it still doesn't look like a set. So maybe three or four tiny thumb drives or SD cards, colour coded and numbered, all squeezed into a matchbox. That would do it. Maybe I could start a trend.

(Slightly) More seriously. I've never been a fan of omnibus editions. In paper they were too heavy for comfortable reading, and in ebooks you normally miss out on the (hopefully) nice glossy covers for each. And I while I do own a couple of box sets of paper books, I'm not a big fan of those either; the boxes just make it awkward to get the books in and out, and they don't look right on the shelf.
