All Hallow's Eve (Charles Williams)
So .... this being All Hallow's Eve, I decided to re-read "All Hallow's Eve" again. This is at least the third time, and with re-reading and more world history and life under my belt, it is beginning to make more sense.
Charles Williams died in 1945. Is this book now public domain??? I have a PRC derived from Gutenberg (I think) from 2008, which is in dreadful shape. It has sentences missing, etc. I looked at Amazon's for-sale book, but a 2013 review said that it is also very flawed, so I didn't buy it. I also have the book I just read, the paperback (DTB) that I bought in 1976 when I was required to read it for a class on the Inklings. For Wheaton College, while on a Wheaton in England (London and Oxford) tour. At age 18, it was eerie, but went *way* over my head! Anyway ... I'm ready to re-read it immediately, and correct the text file from the DTB in my hands, if anyone else is capable of converting the text file into all the other formats that MR offers ebooks in. Dr Drib, I know you were interested in it in 2008, and were lamenting the poor copy that Gutenberg had. Is this now permissible? Is anyone willing to do the other half of the work, if I correct the flat text file? Calibre created a flat text file for me, from the PRC that I have. PS I have 4-5 others of Charles Williams', in DTB format, bought at the same time. In case there is interest in others. Although I read an ebook format (I think) of "Descent Into Hell" a while ago and found it not lacking. Last edited by badgoodDeb; 10-31-2015 at 10:22 AM. |

Oh. Ok. Actually I was thinking that we'd probably take long enough to wait until 2016, just to be safe. Will it then be legal in the US?
Well, @Froide, no, they didn't do a great job. They used the same source that I had already seen. Same errors. I can do a "read online" (is that permissible?) and search the first chapter for the phrase "unless indeed the City heard" and immediately after, the word "facade" has problems. The DTB prints it with cedillas (?) on the c. You know, little hanging down things. These days we just skip those, but back then, they still considered it a French word, and printed them. The first instance of "facade" in that sentence is rendered "faqades" and the second is "fagade". That's where I stopped reading the ebook and reverted to my DTB. So I don't know what the rest of the book is like. Previously, there was an actual whole sentence missing. I didn't read hard enough to see if that is still missing in this version. |

No, I'm afraid not. It won't enter the US public domain for quite a while. I'm not sure entirely when - I'll let those who are better acquainted with US copyright law than I am to advise on that.

My paperback is printed in Grand Rapids, copyrited 1948, but reprinted 1982. I guess this is a set I bought after college, when I was actually making money!

But USA copyright is more complex. Cornell University has a good summary. If there was a US registration in 1945, it would have had to be renewed about 28 years late, around 1973. For renewals of this date, we'll need to check the database kept at Stanford University. Ah - and there is a record. All Hallow's Eve by Charles Williams, registered 19 Jan 1945, renewed 14 Feb 1972. That means it has a US copyright of 95 years, and will fall into the US public domain on 1st January 2041, in just over 25 years time. |

Thanks for that - I knew that this was an area in which you're a lot more knowledgeable than I am!

According to this chart, it looks like it would enter public domain in the U.S. in 2040 (95 years after the publication date), since a search of the copyright renewal database shows that the original copyright was renewed.

25 years from now? I won't worry about it then. By then, we'll probably have a chip embedded in our brains, and can just upload books directly to the chip if we want to read a book! I want the chip with the extra storage capacity please.
Although it didn't prove especially helpful to Simon Illyan, did it ..... (sorry, switching venues here, but there is another live thread about Lois McMaster Bujold too!) |

A lot has happened since 2008.
Anyone who wishes to take one of the books I put together - and assuming a book is not copyrighted - is certainly welcome to improve upon what I attempted to do in those earlier years. ![]() |
