Deleting files
I updated Calibre to 2.40 (64 bit) and then added a few books that were duplicates of books I already had in the library. I then proceeded to look through the duplicates and I deleted a few of the duplicates. I then tried to open some of the remaining books and they wouldn't open. I looked at the folder in Windows Explorer and the all of the files were gone (not just the epub file but the jpg and opf files also). I was able to recover the files from the recycle bin and I placed them back where they belonged. I then tried to delete the duplicates and all of the files and folders were deleted. At one point even the folder for the author had been deleted.
Has anyone else seen anything like this? What can I do to troubleshoot this? Thanks |

@JohnL - Preferences->Add books includes settings for what to do with duplicates, IIRC one of them is to overwrite existing format
If you Remove a book with the Del key then the book folder and contents are removed. If, after a book delete, an author folder has no book folders then the author folder is deleted. You can delete individual formats with Alt/Del. If you're not seeing an 'Are you sure' style warning messages then you must have turned it off, they can be restored via Preferences->Behaviour->Reset all disabled confirmation dialogues BR |

@BetterRed - Thanks for the suggestions, but they don't seem to have anything to do with this problem. The setting you mentioned is turned off because I like to look at new duplicates and determine whether or not the newer copy is better that the existing one. I do get the dialog box that states that 'The 1 selected book(s) will be permanently deleted.....' At this point when I click on 'OK' the entire folder for the author is deleted. It's as if I had all of the books for the author selected (which I don't) but to add to the confusion the dialog box definitely does say '1' (one) book will be deleted.
![]() I've installed the latest update (2.41) but the problem is still there. BTW, I am using the 64bit version on Windows 7. Any other suggestions? |

If the Author folder goes, it is because the DB says there is no other books using (assigned to) it. The DB is wrong. 1) It may be confused if you used more than 1 OS on the Library Windows is case insensitive. Linux can create john smith, John smith, John Smith folders Windows can not deal with 3 folders with the same name (to it) 2) Books were added/changed using the OS <big No No. read the FAQ's and stickies |

What's odd is that checking the library showed me that I have 40 to 50 books that show up as 'Extra Titles'. I have never manipulated the library folder outside of Calibre, but the database got corrupted anyway. Looks like I need to check the library occasionally so I don't end up with a bunch of titles to fix. Thanks again for your help! |

BTW Years of running Calibre and only involving techniques on the Don't Do This List (implied in FAQ) has resulted in those kinds of errors |
