Error No available formats

Running latest 64 bit version on a Win 8.1 64 bit machine. Today trying to open a few books and got the above error message. When I open the Calibre library the books are there in the proper formats. I tried adding the folder again and got the message that they are already in the library.

This is not happening with all books.

Any suggestions?

That message means your device (driver) says 'nor supported/configured"

Like trying to send a EPUB to a Kindle4. It wants a Mobi, AZW...

You misunderstand. I was trying to open the book from within Calibre on my laptop. The files are there in the folder. In fact when I click once on the book it shows in the right pane that the book is in epub and mobi format and yet when I try to open the books I get the error message. I have looked in the folder and the books are there.

Will any book (same formats) open?? Something may have glitched the Use Internal Viewer Formats list (Preferences: Behavior)

Run the Library maintenance utility if the behavior was good

Some books do open without a problem. I ran library maintenance. It found several books with format issues and I chose to fix them. Ran it again and found no problems but the same books still get the same message.

So, as a test I added the same folder for one book. It warned me it was a duplicate but I added it. The new duplicate will open without a problem so I deleted the old. There are enough books with this problem that I would rather not have to do this for each one. Is there another solution?

Thanks for the help.

Have you switched from a different OS?
Are you using some sort of a cloud storage with your Library? (Ever?)
Did you restore your Library from a backup/cloud?

The failure of the Maintenance to indicate issues (I don't expect it to FIX all of them) puzzles me

Never stored in the cloud. I originally had the library on a Win 7 computer that went down. I had backed up my library to an external HD and copied it to the same folder, documents, on the Win 8.1 computer.

@sespr - can you try this

Open the Book folder (press 'O') for one of the problem books, that will open a file manager window. Now drag one of the format files in question and drop it on the right sidebar (book details panel) - I know that sounds 'daft' but... it would appear that there's a mismatch between the database and the library.

Did that create a new format file in the book folder or overwrite the existing one? And what happens, if you try to open the format from within calibre?

Check attributes, ownership. Windows probably thinks you are not the files owner, due to them coming from another pc. Try a take ownership freeware utility or see if you can fix it via properties and sharing options

And if you DO find something, please describe precisely what you found.

Maybe the developer can improve the Maintenance problem report if he knows what happened.

This is only happening with a small portion of the library.

Pressing O opens the file folder but it is empty and yet when I go to the calibre folder and open it from there the books are there. I should add that running the library maintenance tool apparently duplicated all the folders and they all have the same files in them. Double clicking an epub or mobi from the calibre folder results in it opening and telling me the book is already in the library. Telling it to go ahead anyway creates an entry that I can then open.

At this point the easiest thing for me to do is to transfer files from the calibre folder manually to the Kindle.

I am guessing that I shouldn't run restore database from library maintenance?

That says, 'Not the same folder', but both (folders) do exist

Look at the full path in the address/titlebar for the 'o' is empty case
That is using the OS file explorer to show you where Calibre thinks the book was placed.

Now do the same for a 'Good' book (from the Library)

Somehow, you ended up with 2 libraries (the structure). This can happen if you mess with folder names under the skirts or use the OS to move/restore titles.

That sounds very fishy. Can you compare the file paths (take a close look) -- I find it very hard to believe that Windows Explorer reports no files when the folder is opened from calibre, and the exact same folder has files in it when opened the long way.

EDIT: I really should get in the habit of reloading pages before replying ninjaed again

But we both believe the same. The Library the OP is looking at with Explorer is not The Library Calibre is currently using (someone may have used Remove Formats: x, creating an empty Library)
