Look into VPN services. Personally, I use Cloak, which has flexible pricing plans and is easy to use and configure. Cloak's developers are in the U.S., and it's a small company. They are very quick to answer any questions you may have, too.

And I don't see anything wrong with asking here. This is the forum for Apple devices. 😊

Apple devices are not the Only ones that go online in public spots. But IF you wish to be an Apple snob that's fine.

I have been playing with and working on and troubeshooting computers, and computer devices since the late 1970s. And I stayed away from Apple for all of that time because I did not like the fact that they controled the hardware and software. But I have come to realize that Apple was smarter than everyone else.
So when I retired I decided that I was going to make a real change in my life and that meant that I no longer wanted to troubleshoot computers or software, so I have moved to Apple devices and I believe that I have made the correct shoice. So far with a year of using the IPhone with no issues, I decided to get the IPad. I have no plans of getting a Mac I no longer need that type of computer. So am a Apple fanboy maybe I am becoming one. But I will be using a Kindle e-ink reader for my ebook reading. |

When I am on a public wi-fi, I don't go to banking site or any personal security/shopping sites. I will browse but not "purchase" until I get to a safer network.

@cvkemp, do you really need to use hospots, given that you have an iPhone 5S which can connect to the Internet itself? Do you live in an area with poor mobile reception? I've used my iPhone as a "personal hotspot" for my WiFi-only iPad with great success.

I have NordVPN, and have had hotspot shield in the past. The latter is worth a trial, you can maintain the free version forever, Elite isnt too expensive though.

Most places yes the Iphone does great. But there are areas around here where the coverage is way to bad. I can always make calls but the data coverage is what is so bad.

A VPN service provides some protection. But the reality is that you basically should never use any wifi that you don't either control or trust.
