Free (nook/Kindle/Kobo/iTunes UK) There's Always Tomorrow [Post-WWII Family Drama]
There's Always Tomorrow by British author Pam Weaver is her post-WWII 1950s-era historical literary/family drama novel set in a small village in Sussex, centred around the discovery of a married demobbed soldier's illegitimate orphaned child from Australia, the product of a wartime affair shrouded in misleading secrecy, which his wife now struggles to reconcile her feelings towards as she prepares to raise the girl as the daughter the couple could never have, free courtesy of publisher HarperCollins UK's Avon imprint.
Currently free @ B&N UK, Amazon UK, iTunes UK, and Kobo (probably just available to the UK, as this wasn't free in any of the other regional Amazon/iTunes stores that I spot-checked, though YMMV. Probably also Google Play UK. Unlikely to cross the pond, as we've a pretty low transmigration rate for HC UK freebies to begin with. If it happens you like this one and wish to read more, it looks as though two of the author's other standalone WWII-aftermath historical family drama novels, Better Days Will Come and Pack Up Your Troubles, are promotionally sale-priced at just £0.99 and £1.49 respectively across various UK outlets. And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Because I'm a sucker for WWII homefront and related stuff that also explores the fallout of the war on the people left behind, even if this particular iteration of it isn't one I'm personally likely to read. But I approve on general principle of the subsubgenre and it's nice to see it offered with tie-in promo sales as well. ![]() Enjoy! Description When Dottie’s husband Reg receives a mysterious letter through the post, Dottie has no idea that this letter will change her life forever. Traumatised by his experiences fighting in World War II, Reg isn’t the same man that Dottie remembers when he is demobbed and returns home to their cottage in Worthing. Once caring and considerate, Reg has become violent and cruel. Dottie just wants her marriage to work but nothing she does seems to work. The letter informs Reg that he is the father of a child born out of a dalliance during the war. The child has been orphaned and sole care of the young girl has now fallen to him. He seems delighted but Dottie struggles with the idea of bringing up another woman’s child, especially as she and Reg are further away than ever from having one of their own. However, when eight-year-old Patsy arrives a whole can of worms is opened and it becomes clear that Reg has been very economical with the truth. But can Dottie get to the bottom of the things before Reg goes too far? A compelling family drama that will appeal to fans of Maureen Lee, Lyn Andrews, Josephine Cox and Annie Groves. |
