Google announces two Nexus Phones

http://www.cnet.com/news/google-unve...-built-tablet/

Quote:

Both the Nexus 5X, which starts at $349 (£339, AU$659), and the Nexus 6P, which starts at $499 (£449, AU$899), are available for early order today but won't ship until October.
Quote:
Both the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P get a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device. Google calls it "Nexus Imprint," and it works with Android Pay, a service that lets you pay at the register with your phone, akin to Apple Pay.

The handsets also get upgraded 12.3-megapixel rear-facing cameras, which can shoot better photos indoors, record super-high-resolution 4K video, and create animated GIFs, similar to Apple's Live Photos feature. As for front-facing cameras, the Nexus 6P gets an 8MP version, the Nexus 5X a 5MP device.

Each phone also comes with a 64-bit Qualcomm processor, as well as the new USB Type-C input, a thinner and faster way to connect to a power outlet or computer for data transfers.
More at the source.

Too spendy for my needs. For Android devices, I'm still very happy with the LG Volt ($30) and Galaxy Tab 4-7 ($100) I bought last year. Won't need to upgrade for another year or two. I used to go mid-high end, but found that I was just as happy at the low end.

I'm thinking the term "Premium Android" is well on its way to meaning "Niche" or even "oxymoron". There is very little meaningful differentiation between the low and mid-range and the high end. Especially on the tablet side. Most of the "premium" features look more like goldplating or specmanship.

Most of the investment in Android phones these days is going to low end, emerging markets rather than first world premium phones.

I will say I'm happy with my Moto E ($60.00) and it doesn't even have a flash for the camera. Two features I would like to have though are the fingerprint reader and an NFC chip. I do think paying by phone will become a bigger and bigger thing.

On a side note, I've learned that I much prefer pure Android to the skinned versions. Samsung makes fine hardware, but TouchWiz just looks ugly to me. When I do upgrade my phone, I could see purchasing the Nexus 5X just for that.

I think smartphones are reaching a point where you can get 90% of the features for 10% of the price of the top phones. And those feature are not there just for show but are actually usable.
I have really high hopes for Google's project Ara and its modular system. With it people will be able to pay for the features they want and wont have to pay extra for things they don't want or need. But still have the option to add features if they need in the future.

My Elephone, quite cheaper than that, has both of them (and pure Android).

Alas, here in the States, such is not the case. Most phone manufacturers play with Android in some way.

Hopefully, your Elephone receives updates. Sharp released a nice phone here: The Crystal Aquos. And they didn't mess with Android very much. But then they never supported it with an Android update, though the phone could easily handle it.

OS updates are one thing that makes me jealous of iPhone and Windows Phone users.

I have 4.4 and I'm happy. I've got an iPad and I'm a bit tired of updates, as they usually give me nothing but troubles.
