Hello

I can choose in the metadata various «roles» to list contributors to the project. A great invention, this. There is a long list, but I still miss some, like the «Ebook-Manager, the Ebook-Producer» to name just two. Is there a place to create more roles?

Dublin Core
That is only what is (fixed) on the list

You can use Add Role for a custom entry

Use a Saved Clip, and paste that into the OPF if it is always the same

Be aware that your book may be rejected by distributors with overly strict validation for non-DC metadata

Thank you for yur response. I heard from another source, that no reader shows these infos anyway, so why bother with them.

Calibre adds Series Metadata tags. If you import a Calibre Created/modified book (into anothe Library), You get series Metadata

Sometime Standards creators have their heads buried up to their ankles.
Books belonging to Series have always been available in my lifetime.

It does not HURT (as long as it validates) to include. Who knows, Somday the standard might match common use

Some programs might support Calibre tags, but it is not standard! I believe there is also one reader that supported certain Calibre tags.

Anyway, be aware that Title, Author and language are mandatory tags. Others can be very useful for library programs like Calibre.

Quite correct, Marvin Reader supports series and series index tags.

It never hurts to add the metadata - as long as it validates. If a reader/device doesn't use it, then complain to that reader/device developer to get with the times!

Well, as the book will probably not become a great world hit, it was created more or less as a joke, I really use the advice, not to bother about the roles. And the book will certainly not get a successor based on the same caracters.

So, thanks again for your help. It is much appreciated and I learned a lot.

If someone deserves a credit, give it in a straightforward readable form in the front matter or an afterword. (There's a good argument for almost all front matter being placed at the end of an eBook, but that's another subject.)

My view on the metadata is the same as on the colofon in books. It should be there, but I will skip by it when I am reading...

I'm pleased to see that increasing numbers of mainstream publishers are beginning to do just that.

There's one big practical reason for back matter. When you present your book for sale on Amazon, prospective buyers can preview a certain number of pages. Starting from the beginning of the book. Show them an inline TOC, that's useful. But don't waste the allocation on other front matter, get into the meat!

Totally agree.
This is NOT a printed book... Being displayed upon a Retail shelf.

All the rave review fluff is used to Sell the book.

You have already BOUGHT the e-book.

Old Electronics engineering adage:

"Don't blow hot air in the customers face"
(OK, that was referring to the placement of cooling fans, but it is still appropriate )

I think you miss the point. The preview is available BEFORE you buy. Reviews may be relevant. A descriptive TOC may be too. But it's a pity to waste the limited number of preview pages on publishing credits, dedications, extra title pages... I've even seen eBooks that preserve the paper-publishing convention of blank pages within the front matter.
