Did you Restart Windows (W10 x64 required a restart ) ?

Did you follow some of the FAQ suggested steps when the install fails?

Yep here it freezes also on Win 7
A friend of my had the same problem on win 8.1

[edit]
I tried the restart, that did the trick. That was never neccessary before.
The install procedure askes if I want to start Calibre, that fails if you have to restart first

Restarts are required when a shared resource is IN USE by more than just the program being installed.

W10 displayed a restart required message
NB This was the second one of the day. W10 did an update earlier that needed one (2 days in a row. bleeding edge )

Something is broke or bloated with add-ons.
My P4 2.4GHz is fully up from a cold boot in less than a minute.

Get the Autoruns utility from Sysinternals and see what else goes at boot

Disable some of those faster program starts, boot time helpers

Calibre version 2.36 64bit installed here on Win 10 with no restarts yesterday, I've done 3 Win 10, and 5 Win 7 remote installs this morning, they were all OK too. I do upwards of a dozen calibre installs a week, I have never had a request for a restart after a calibre install - mind you I do ensure calibre's not already running, as I do with all application installs.

The only time I see a restart for anything (apart from WU) is when an install asks me if its OK to stop or restart something and I say NO.

My Win 10 system (SSD system drive) shows the desktop within a minute, I run 25 'start with windows' tray gadgets (some are standard - eg network centre), they take another couple of minutes to come to life - but that does not stop me starting my browser, mail client etc.

Just noticed the Win 10 upgrade took liberties with my date and time display settings

@Mondriaan - try this
  • Backup libraries and configuration data, see How do I backup calibre?
  • Uninstall calibre via control panel
  • Do a System File Check, see Use the System File Checker tool
  • Run a lightweight registry cleaner - such as Piriform's CCleaner
  • Download a fresh copy of calibre from the 2nd Alternate download location, that transports over https(ecure) which should overcome any possibility that you're getting a dodgy copy from your ISP's cache.
  • Install that copy - it will pick up existing configuration and libraries

Thank you for your reaction,

1. The System file checker does not find errors
2. The registry cleaner refuses to install (i have a problem on windows 7 that often programs do not stop even with process explorer from sys internals, there are more w7 users who have this problem (a problem already existing in 2012)).

I pass your solution because 2.35 works, i would like to know why 2.35 works and further versions wont.

Thank you

@Mondriaan - if CCleaner and other programs wont run properly, and can't be killed with Process Explorer, and the latest calibre wont install then I think something is is very wrong with your Windows installation

My suggestion is to reinstall Windows, you might be able to do an Inline Repair Install That will preserve most applications and Windows functions and customisations, that link has full details.

If you are using the 64bit version of calibre, you could try installing the 32 bit version, they can coexist and they will use the same configuration data and see same libraries. Your other choice is to use the portable version of calibre.

I have had similar issues w/ Calibre since v2.34. they install fine, but freeze at the intializing user interface message. 2.38 and 2.39 can get up and running at first but eventually hit the wall. It is not windows. I use ccleaner religiously an everything else is clean and up to date with no issues. Only Calibre.

I have uninstalled SOS backup as i thought that was the conflict, but still no love. 2.34 works without issue or bug.

very odd.

good luck.
