Calibre in Win 8.1, Installation failure?
I am trying to install calibre in a win 8.1 machine. Downloaded 2.39 through firefox, chrome and IE. All had the dame failure.
The file it says I need permission for does not exist. I carried a 2.38 that I had used previously on a win 7 machine successfully, to the win 8.1 machine and got the same failure. Is there something special about 8.1 and calibre? |

Unlike an .exe file you cannot ordinarily run a .msi file "As administrator" (you can but it is not a trivial exercise). The following is easier.
If your user account is not an administrator one then create one and try that. If that does not work then check the permissions on the folder that has been created (the one in the error message) or if that folder is not there then the folder it is going in. Change either SYSTEM or Everyone to having full control. If not known how to do this a Google will show you for sure, but any problems let us know. |

That is not the UAC popup.
That is an error because UAC did not authorize a system level change. UAC normally causes the screen to go Grey with a Yellow warning box in the center. UAC has been present since Vista AND PREVENTS FLYBY (malware) INSTALLS. The user must approve any system level changes. Some folk, IMHO mistakenly defeat this safety step to avoid having to approve an installation. It is their foot (and data) ![]() |

So I downloaded Calibre Portable, ran it as Admin, installed perfectly, added the plug-in I wanted, and it all works, except I don't have the correct icon on the desktop, but I can live with that.
Thanks for the help. ![]() |

@Gene45 - maybe Windows 'thinks' calibre is already installed and its looking to remove the calibre startup folder before creating a new one.
Before doing anything I suggest you take a system restore point see, Create a restore point If anything goes wrong you can restore to this state, see Restore system files and settings First, try running a lightweight registry cleaner, I suggest Piriform Ccleaner. Then try the install again If that doesn't fix it try this Start the install, after ticking the agree to license box, go into Advanced, viz: I would try these before AnotherCat's suggestion to modify permissions of C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu. Accept the install location. Then in the next popup turn off start menu, viz: The first one will get rid of registry cruft - including invalid locations - which is no bad thing, and it shouldn't do any harm. The second one is calibre specific. IMO it's better to avoid changing security settings on system owned folders such as the Start Menu folder because the changes will apply to all applications that use the folder. If something works let us know which one. Added : Ah, just saw your post re portable. You really shouldn't need to be doing anything as Admin. Seems to me you have a badly configured or corrupt Windows install. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 09-27-2015 at 10:01 PM. |

SYSTEM permission SHOULD be Full Control as stated and Administrator accounts SHOULD be Full Control. If worried about Everyone or non Administrator accounts just make them authorised for Read & Execute which is what they should be normally. Of course, if SYSTEM and Administrator accounts are Full Control AND Everyone and non Administrator accounts are at least Read & Execute already then permissions are not likely to be the cause of the problem. But setting Everyone to Full Control is the killer test because if that doesn't work then the problem is almost certainly not permissions for that folder (one can afterwards always change it back again to its normal Read & Execute if concerned). EDIT: Solved while I was typing ![]() ![]() Last edited by AnotherCat; 09-27-2015 at 10:22 PM. |

The malware folks on this forum said never to use the ccleaner registry cleaner.
Anyway I go it working. The file that I needed permission for did not exist. |
