Help a noob?
Hello Folks,
That $50 tablet + $67 Prime membership has me sorely tempted. Perhaps some Amazon vet here will help me with a few questions. First, does owning a Fire tablet allow an Amazon Prime customer to use the "Kindle Owners' Lending Library"? Or is that only for the e-ink Kindles? And second, are Kindle books marked for "Kindle Unlimited" also part of that "Kindle Owners' Lending Library"? (I realize that the Lending Library through Prime allows only one book per month.) If not, how can I tell (on Amazon's web page) whether a book would be available through the Lending Library or not? ![]() |

I'm pretty sure that you can access the Kindle Owner's Lending Library on the Fire tablets--but make sure and confirm that with someone who owns a fire!
Regarding the Kindle Owner's Library / Unlimited--many of the books in the Unlimited program are available in the KOL, but not all. On Amazon's website, it will show whether books are part of KU, and if they are also a part of KOL, it will also show "Prime-borrow for free". (At least in the US.) |

Okay, I'm catching up. Fire tablets are definitely included. Search results on the web site have "Borrow for free from your Kindle device. Join Amazon Prime" noted on the right side of the listing.
Still need a way to filter search results to include only those Prime-eligible loaners. Hmmm. |

On the left side, there should be a checkbox for Kindle Unlimited Eligible. That's how I do my borrow once a month - search a keyword, select the box, then find anything new that I might want to read.

If you are only getting Prime for the KOLL, save your money. It would be cheaper to just buy the books. Most KOLL books are $4.99 or less, so it doesn't make sense to get Prime only for that. If you want the streaming movies, too, then that's different.

Hi and welcome. Once you get used to the jungle it isn't so bad.
Don't forget free two day shipping + instant videos that you can watch on your computer, tablet or smart Tv. Free streaming music too. Not to mention Amazon has a ton or two of free books too. To own not borrow. Did I mention on some physical items they are the cheapest place or only place around? |

You're both correct, of course. My better half is going for the Prime for the teeeveee and the moooveees. I might as well grab a free read once a month, especially since our local public library system is very poor at ebooks.

Calenorn--
For searching for books available in the Kindle Lending Library, try the following: Do a search under books (not Kindle books specifically) for the type of books you're looking for. Then--click on "Prime" under the "Show Results For" option on the left side of the screen. Lastly, choose "Kindle Edition". As far as I can tell, this limits the books shown to only the Kindle editions that are Prime lending eligible. |

AND as far as other free books .... well, I see you've been a member here at MobileRead for a while. Follow the threads which discuss "Free/Bargain" books in the styles that you like, and you'll soon have more free books than you can read in 3 lifetimes. Some won't be worth while, and you'll throw them out after a chapter or two. But there are some that are quite good, and will get you hooked on a new author. (They you'll find you want to buy more books by that author; that's okay if it's a great author!)
By "follow" the threads, I mean "subscribe" via email, and once a day find out what books are new and free. I've got so many free books that I'm swimming in them! Plus, of course, the Amazon Prime ones, which are indeed rather hard to find. You can also find them (somewhat more easily, but that's debatable) FROM the kindle. But then it's hard to wade through and get the right topic type. It's so hard to find them, that it's a good thing one can only get one a month. I can't FIND them faster than that (or else I'm not willing to search). ![]() |
