PRC Files?

Hi all,

I'm looking to download a couple of ebooks (MacBeth and Importance of Being Ernest) and have found them by searching under the Mobi downloads - but the files attached to those threads are .prc files and not .mobi.

Have I misunderstood something or is there a way to convert these .prc's?

It is not uncommon to find mobi files with the prc extension. Calibre handles them with no issues, including conversion.

For practical effects they are the same format.

But... "Mobi downloads"? It should say "Kindle formats". Where did you see it says "Mobi"?

EDIT: Ah, I see, here the "format" column says "MOBI", even though the format selection drop-down says "Kindle Formats"

"PRC" is a file extension, not a format. The Kindle handles files with a PRC extension just fine (provided that what's in the file is a Mobi book, of course). No need to convert anything.

I also see that the "send to kindle" program for windows recognises .prc files for sending directly.

The ".mobi" file extension is actually a rather modern innovation. Mobipocket-format books always traditionally used a ".prc" extension.
