Problems with collections transfer from calibre to Sony T2

I have had over 400 books in my calibre library set up to create collections on my device by author and series. These books have come from various sources. I have just added around 200 books to my library. I did not do anything to change my old books. All books in the calibre library look exactly as they should.

However, when I transferred these new books to my Sony T2, only the new books have information in the series field of the device. All of my older books dropped their collections sorting.

I have tried:
1) deleting an old book from my device and adding it back. Series field remains blank.
2) with my device plugged in, going to configure and deleting collection choices and restarting calibre. The new books retained information in the series field even though I had removed the choices.
3) removed an old book from the device, updated my collection choices, then added the book back. Series field remained blank.
4) on the device screen right clicked on a book to manually update series. Only series existing for new books were in the drop down options. So if the books did not belong in a collection belonging to one of the new books that won't work. Plus, I really hate the idea of having to manually adjust over 400 books.

With such a large library, the ability to sort into proper collections is really important to me. Any advice on how to fix this will be appreciated!

Check that "Metadata Management" (Preferences / Sending books to devices) is set to Automatic.
